I'm doing a bit of painting...

Eventually got the lid off the plastic tub.

Tried to put it back on but gave up and used some packing tape to secure the lid and seal it!

Is there a special method for opening and closing plastic gallon's of paint?

    Thanks

Probably, Somehow. I think, you managed to open the can eithout breaking the little plastic tab just under the rim of the lid.. It is a bugger to reseal the tub with it still in place.

You should try the 15 liter bin type, I needed a pair of pliers to rip the seal off.
There's a small tab that you need to cut out with a sharp knife just below the lid, then you have to rip the seal that goes between the lid and container, I used a pair of pliers for better grip.
If that fails ask a Filipino.
