What amazed me was how accurate their records are of mine going back to 1973.

Oh that National Insurance number is your identity :D

I always used to quote it (made up number) like UO 78 24 21A SIR! in a military style voice with a salute at the end :D

They ain't ever going to forget about you on those records and that database probably even long after you are dead :D

Mine go back to 1975 although I got my NI number at age 15 that would have been 1974 so they might have edited out a little for age 15 as maybe I was not eligible to actually pay NI back then.

A few years back I worked out my total lifetime NI contributions to date it came to £95,000 and that excludes Employers NI, adjusted for todays value it is £140,000 I took each individual year and applied the Bank of England's inflation calculator relative to today :D

i think the going back to UK every 6 months bit relates to getting NHS treatment.

Possibly but that is actually 3 months, technically you lose NHS rights if you are out of the country for 3 months but if you regularly returned every 6 months they probably would not notice, it's more about the claim of residency, but you could be in trouble if they asked to see your travel history.

The UK would not refuse emergency treatment but regular ongoing treatment could be a problem.

When I retire I will return for a month or so every 3 months for the first year or two, I plan to keep a base in the UK.

I am blessed by the fact that my wife likes Wales too.

I will keep on enjoying my pension and free prescription and free Hospital care, if needed, here.

And her indoors, would rather go to Italy with me on holiday, than being chased for money and pasalubong, by the younger family members, every minute of the day in Pinas

If a Brit leaves the UK for more than 3 months he must inform the government and hand in his/her NHS medical card.

Been on to Works and pension, NI record shows 3 years shy. Works and pension says 5 years shy. Got a letter dated April 2020 last week inviting me to pay voluntary contributions almost 3k pounds,
It will give me an extra 100 pound a month or more. Too late to pay this year it finished April 5th 2021 Got to send another letter to HMRC to find the exact amount, another 10 months wait for this poor PH post service.
    More fun in the PH

You can check your records online. When I go online I can see:

    1) Number of complete years NI. contributions.
    2) Number of incomplete years NI.
    3) How much they will pay out to me per week when the time comes.

To qualify for the full amount it needs to be a minimum of 35 years paid NI contributions. I have 40 with 9 incomplete years and this year isn’t up to date yet.

But If you have less than 35 years worth , you still qualify for a part payment. But there is also a minimum number of years worth (about 10 I seem to recall).

As I will get paid this year onwards I know now exactly how much it will be this year.

Are you able to establish contact with them online? I have also phoned them, but it normally takes a good while to get through to them on the phone and no doubt expensive from the Philippines.

I received a letter from them a few days ago with an invitation to make the claim for payments starting August 2021. My claim has gone in online.

Jim I thought you were in receipt of your state pension already?

There are limits on how many years back you can make contributions for missing NI years.

See here Voluntary National Insurance: How and when to pay - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

I'm already getting my pension, Jim. I made a claim to pay voluntary payments as I have 3 years short for a full pension but when I got a letter from HMRC it states I have 5 years short!
It goes back to 2006-2007... Then a payment date without a penalty. Date sent, April 2020. Date I received, March 2021.
After a lengthy phone call to Works and Pension explaining I want to make the shortfall of voluntary contributions, and to explain the postal service in the PH is very slow they said I have to apply again.
Everything is 10x more difficult here specially with the SARS-virus.

I take it you cannot get online access?

Yes I can, but somethings they ask for a letter to be sent and it takes too long. Like I said previously it took more than 10 months for me to get a letter from work and pensions. Probably because of this Pandemic.

So you would be paying voluntary class 3 contributions I take it, as a person who is over state pension age.

Class 3 cost £15.40 a week so three missed years would be about £2400 and 5 years would cost about £4000.

One of the warnings on the pension pages is that voluntary payments will not always increase your pension, so I would be looking for some kind of concrete guarantee from them.

I have to admit that an increase of £100 a month would make this worth it as you would recover your investment in as little as three years and then be in profit every year after but when I've looked into this before I thought I found that the Return On Investment the ROI was much poorer than that, are you 100% sure that they are stating per month and that they don't mean per quarter or per year for that increase?

Do you get your state pension paid locally in the Phils and if so is that quarterly as they might be quoting you an increase of £100 ish per quarter rather than per month which would be more in line with my research on this subject some years ago.

You might have to correspond via some other private courier?

Two of the missing years was class 2 and only a few weeks missing only, but the last 3 I have to pay class 3.
Total was 2,949. But that was last year. This year they will tell me how much I have to pay. When I get the letter:rolleyes:
