    Can anyone answer my query,
We got married in the philippines, garden wedding with pastor & have phil wedding certificate.
I was recently told that because I have not registered the wedding with UK registry office then under UK law we are not legally married. Is this true?

Hi have a look at section 2 this covers your question I think and cannot see anything more recent, it maybe worth considering that the UK no longer registers the marriage on UK records but does recognise the marriage as long as it meets the criteria in section2,whoever told you what they told you might be getting the 2 points mixed up!
Others on the site might have a view also

So long as the marriage is valid in the Philippines and satisfies the requirements of the link that John posted yes it's recognised. There is no requirement for it to have been undertaken in the UK for it to recognised under UK law, just like there is no requirement for a divorce to have been undertaken in the UK for that to be recognised either. In practice this means that if both of you were free to marry, the marriage is not polygamous or to someone who is not legally able to marry (for example by being underage) then there will be no problem.

I agree , you are married here in uk as well even you got married in Philippines . I got married in ph too but my ex husband registered our marriage to FCO but you don't really need to do that . It's up to you if you want to register here , I guess.

i had to get a certificate to prove that there was ''no legal impediment '' why we should not marry i went to our register office in stevenage -herts --i payed a fee for the search as i was married before & my wife died of a heart attack --this takes 6 weeks to do --when i had flown to marry my wife ( also in dasmarinas -cavite ??) i took her death certificate & birth certificate & our wedding certificate --they refused to marry me ?? as they said i might have married 3 times since my last wife died ? ( my filipino wife was '' not happy ??haha ) as she had said i needed this --certificate of no impediment --by the way can any one tell me how to put a photo on my profile

You will need to make an appointment and fill in 'affidavit of marital status' at the British embassy in Manila. They will look at your documents (birth certificate, UK CNI, previous wife death certificate/marriage cert , proof of residence in the UK (such as council tax bill) and passport) and will issue you the 'affidavit of marital status' with an embassy seal. You can get info on the process from the british embassy website.

This is what you take to the town hall in the phils to then register your intention to marry. You then get the license to marry back (about 14 working days later in my case) and then you get married.

I don't think a UK issued document from a UK registry office is going to be enough.

A certificate of marriage issued by the Philippine National Statistics Office (NSO) is accepted in the UK. You do not need - and can not obtain - a Consular Record of Marriage.

Yeah. I didn't use one. I just thought that since he was advised he needed one, he might as well take it. but now we know that actually we are talking about something that happened in 2010.

Plenty of Britishers marry Filipinas in the Philippines. If the UK did not recognised such a union, they would never grant a spouse settlement visa!

Hello. I need your help. Me and my british husband got married in 2010 here in the Philippines. My husband went back to Belfast in 2017 to work. I have read in the FCO that UK government doesn't issue certificates of marriages if outside UK. And I have read the posts here that since the marriage is legal, it is still recognized in the UK. My question is, what if my husband cheated and now with another woman. If they are planning to get married, how will the British Government know that he is still married? What will be my rights? In law, my husband committed concubinage while the other woman committed adultery. What can I file against them? Or can they get married even if he is still married to me? We have children, do I have to register my children?

I hope you can give me answers. thank you.

Is your husband still "happily" married with you? Do you have any reasons not to trust him whilst he's in Belfast?

If you have a legal marriage in the Philippines, then he cannot (or should not) marry again in the UK. The chances of him committing bigamy would be very slim. British men are aware of the punishments for this and generally only morons or very desperate people do this. As for "normal" adultery, who knows. No punishment for this (unlike the Philippines).

If your marriage did turn sour, I suspect it would be difficult for you to exercise any rights you might have if you are in the Philippines. However, I wouldn't start researching "worst case scenarios" unless you have evidence otherwise.

Around about 2007-8 I got into a conversation with a guy at the bar on the first floor of Schiphol airport lounge 2 who was truly shocking, he sat their laughing about having married multiple women in the middle east, all bigamous, there is an extra class of Brits who are just scum.

    Somewhat different circumstances Malcolm.
