Do you know why they are named Aston Martin, and what led to the model range DB?

That's for sure. The Aston part came from a famous hill climb Aston, that they competed in successfully in the formative years. DB is David Brown, who took the helm in 1947.

I hear all this stuff about Allegros from people who've never actually owned or driven one.

Back in the 70s I'd sometimes hire Allegros. Perfectly good cars was my experience. Quick in their class, great handling, and comfy. I liked the looks too.
The steering wheel you got used to... as one did with the elliptical steering wheel on the earlier (wonderful) Mk3 Cortinas. :)

I worked at Kennings a BL dealer in the 70's when the All Aggro was introduced. After 1 month we had a line off them in the workshop all with one back wheel missing. The rear wheel bearing locknut was not up to the job and BL had o do a full recall.

I'm guessing you were not one of the top reps then bigmac? :)

If I'd had a Lada estate I'd have been parking it in someone else's drive.

it was just me--manager of a small one office estate agency. the MD had lots of other business interests---over 400 employees all told. the whole lot went under.

but i had 2 other cars of my own--a triumph spitfire and a dolomite sprint.

Apparently the Mini was launched in 1959 and as I was born in January 60 I'll claim Sir Alec's iconic car.

Worst car probably Austin Maestro - hatch version of the Montego. Daughter number 1 had come along and needed to replace 13 year old Triumph Dolomite 1300.

The Maestro was roomy and drove well enough but gobbled up wheel bearings and recurring carburettor problems caused me to lose faith in it. Accelerator cable froze a couple of times - scared the hell out of me as I sped up when trying to slow down!

Kept it for couple of years and got Astra which never missed a beat.

    1952.

The obvious choice would be this one:

But in fact my father never had done. He did have a nice Alvis two seater, which he sold, to buy a boring "family car", an Austin Cambridge.

So here's the 1952 Alvis that he would have liked:

and here's the really boring car that we actually had, thanks to me:

which explains why, a few years later one of these "followed him home", to my mother's considerable surprise, firing on three of its six cylinders, and he had lots of boy's fun getting it right again:

Sometimes it feels that a car from my era is the one from the Flintstones....
