President Aquino will inaugurate today the newly completed 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Binugao, Toril, Davao City.

The power plant, owned by Aboitiz- Power and operated by its subsidiary, Therma South, Inc. (TSI), will supply more than 20 electric cooperatives and distribution utilities in Mindanao.

AboitizPower said the power plant is one of the critical projects of the company needed to finally solve the long-term Mindanao power shortages. It is considered as the first major power plant added to the Mindanao grid since 2006.

Shortage of power supply coupled with other problems such as bombings of transmission utilities have caused prolonged brownouts in most parts of Mindanao in the past years.

AboitizPower’s sister company, the Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) already has a 100MW power supply contract with the new power plant.

The power plant will supply power to major cities of Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Gen. Santos, Butuan, Kidapawan, Cotabato and Tagum. It will also serve the provinces of Davao, Caraga, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, parts of Bukidnon, parts of Misamis and parts of Zamboanga peninsula.

Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the power plant of the Aboitiz group will be one of the additional capacities for Mindanao this year to augment the power situation in the area.

“The Department of Energy (DOE) is coordinating efforts to ensure continuous and reliable power supply in Mindanao,” Coloma said.

Yep, just up the road from me.

All done and dusted (no pun intended) watched it on the local news

We've had plenty of brown-outs and other power supply issues recently so here's hoping we now on a good road forward.

Sounds promising when I hear "the power plant of the Aboitiz group will be one of the additional capacities for Mindanao this year to augment the power situation in the area"

    Hooray!

    Yeah...What is that?
I keep hearing those Euro politicians and Barry Obama go on and on about it but I`m still not sure what it is..
    Something about a new tax?

Hopefully no more brownouts for you there... Brownouts for us this year have been far and few between.
Good old cheap and efficient coal power to the rescue again by the looks of it!

Remind me about the Philippines' reserves of coal...

Remind me about the Aboitiz Group's shining reputation for good governance and avoidance of corrupt practices...

Remind me about how the current very severe El Niño is entirely because the moon is made of green cheese.

The good news did not last long - we are back to rotating blackouts and to add insult to injury, water has been off for most of the day.

Edit to add: An almost three hour power-cut today which, given that it is still "winter" here gives one an indication of the precarious state of the Mindanao Grid. Expect four-hour cuts every twelve this summer.

    We've had plenty already.
Whenever we visit Compostela Valley there are 3/4/6/8 hour brown-outs everyday without fail.

Doesn't bother us really. We have plenty of rechargeable LED lightbulbs and fans.
It's not often we have water interruptions and we usually get plenty of notice to prepare if there are any.
