Here we go a bit of a soppy thread but out of interest, how did the married people on here propose? And are there cultural differences In proposing between the uk and the phillipeans?

Had the ring burning a hole in my pocket all weekend.

Was planning to propose when she received her CFO sticker, but this process did not happen as quickly as anticipated. Felt inappropriate to propose after an unsuccessful visit to that place.

Instead, I found myself in Jollibee with her and 3 of her friends. After the server arrived with a chicken bucket to complete our order, I discretely popped the question.

It was spur of the moment and I thought it was great. Now the dust has settled, she also laughs about it. However, at the time she would have preferred something grander. Damn those dramas for filling the girls' heads with all these romantic gestures. It just would not have been my style and I would have wanted the ground to swallow me up if a mass crowd was watching me.

My hubby proposed in our 2nd favorite restaurant (in the world)- somewhere near loch fyne in scotland. I wasnt expecting it as we have eaten there a few times. He excused himself (said toilet break) while we were waiting for desert. When the server came, the ring was in the plate, under the metal cover.

He proposed discreetly and the staff clapped a bit and im glad that the restaurant has few customers.

We can't, so I never have, she is one piece of paper away from being able to marry, but so much time has passed that I don't feel it is necessary anymore.

My future is not in the UK and neither is her's, my daughter however might have a future in Britain one day.

My Mrs proposed to me after about a month of knowing me.
Her problem was that she didn't expect me to say Yes!
Hard to believe that was 33 years ago..

They're not shy that way, it's often the woman's decision to propose :)

I know Mica and I are a nonconventional couple but having been told we are getting married ( within about two weeks of meeting ), I was then told I had to ask her mum for permission as well. So I had to ask " Mrs Calupas, can I marry your daughter..son.. ?" this whole Anak thing confuses me..

Supplemental question, did you have to ask for permission?

We were both living and working in Dubai when I met my future wife. Even though Dubai is fairly liberal, it is still against the law for unmarried couples to be in a sexual relationship, so we had to be very careful. In addition, she only had very little opportunity to get away from her job. Accordingly our courtship was a prolonged drawn out affair. After about 6 months of knowing her, her work contract ended and she returned to Philippines. I followed her a few days later. We met up again in Manila and after a few days break there, we went to Dumaguete to meet her family. Lovely, simple people, who I gelled with immediately. We then spent a month exploring her country, meanwhile arranging a visit visa for her to come back to Dubai. We then spent 2 years together and I knew she was the one that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I had made all sorts of plans in my head about the when and how for the proposal, but one evening whilst she was cooking dinner in the kitchen, I just asked her to marry me. Ask me nicely she said, so down on my knee I went. We both laughed, then cried with happiness. We married in Seychelles and carried on living in Dubai for another 2 years. 6 months ago I retired and we moved into the home that we have built in Philippines. She has visited UK and met all of my large extended family and they love her to bits. However, as much as she enjoyed our holiday in England, there are no plans for us to live there. To be honest I have no desire to live there either. I have been working and living as an expat all of my adult life and as much as I love and miss my family, I couldn't hack it back there. Hence we are happily settled here in Philippines and will just enjoy returning once a year for now.

I really don't want to talk about it. There must have been a lot of drink involved... both times.

I mean... who'd want to marry me... sober ?

Being a soppy old romantic, I got down on one knee in the middle of Soy Street in Mong Kok in Hong Kong and proposed to Elsa.
