    I remember being a newbie on the scene a couple of years ago and would often think "huh?" when I came across certain words that people who had been in a relationship for years had come to understand..

    So I would like to compile a list of words and phrases often used (and often on this forum) that could confuse a newbie.

    To start off....

    Pinoy = Filipino

    Pinay = Filipina

    Pinas = The Philippines (Pinas is short for Pilipinas which is the correct term)

    so far i guess this works in tagalog and visayan but since i only really know cebuano dont know wether to go with that or not as I have personaly avoided tagolog like the plauge as it will just screw with any cebuano learning de ba?

    oo but if your learning either as a target its linguistic suicide to mix them not because people wont understand you but the reverse needs a header so we know which is which

    Cebuano

    Horas para mag inum

    hahaha! Tanan horas, ganahan ko inom, when in Pinas ;)

    But yeh ... I guess the fact that you go to Cebu, so it would be pretty pure cebuano spoken there, but if for example you were in Davao it would be quite normal to mix languages...

    If you throw some Bisaya into a Tag conversation with some tag people, it's not good as they likely won't understand it, but vice versa, it's ok because typically all Filipinos know tagalog :)

    For me, my most used tagalog expression is:

    "Hindi nakaka intindi ako ng tagalog" or a variation on that is "Nakaka intindi ako ng konting tagalog, pero hindi masyado, mas magaling ko magbinisaya" or something like that! :D

    I did spend my first 6 months learning a bit and created classes for expats that was in 08/09 and i have a fair bit of vocab but the grammar is something else.

    The added complication now is that My Missus although brought up in Parang Magindanao was always used to speak tagolog in the house(father from Luzon) mum is a cebuano so while she speaks ceb its almost like a second language same with her daughter and cant always help with my questions

    I find I did understand a lot thats spoken around me and learning the common greatings and commands also means folk around treat you as if you understand which helps in not getting "long nose tax"

    A Maayong Odto kanino talaang followed when one of that group comments on me knowing visayan with a confident "gamay ra" works wonderrs in the local community

    True, it really helps you be seen as more of a local when you're about there. I am actually shocked at the amount of expats where I lived in the Phils, who don't learn any Bisaya :( it is not good. These are the same people who complain about immigrants coming to their country and not learning the language!

    haha, "don't forget to pay"! it's "ayaw" though, or you can say "Bawal" i suppose :)

    Anyway, kuya, what about

    "Bawal Umihi Dito" (Don't piss here) - usually written on walls!

    in bisaya it would be

    Ayaw mangihi diri (or dinhi)
