Reasonably-priced hotel in Makati (or nearby)?

I'm visiting my darling Kris in late January on my first visit to Phils. I'll be staying at hers (Cavite, Bacoor) and will be meeting her son for the first time. I'm not really fussed about doing the tourist thing on this occasion (too much to organise for future!) but it's likely we might visit Manila for a couple of days to allow Kris to show me around.

I will of course use our friend Google to read reviews but just wondered if anyone could recommend a good mid-priced hotel in or near Makati? When Kris came over to see me last month we had 3 nights in London and paid on average (the nightly room tariff varied) £100 a night for a spotless, decent-sized double-room with en-suite and excellent (free) wifi). I'd be happy to pay around this again in Manila but perhaps I'm being overly-optimistic that I'll be able to find somewhere reasonable at this level. I can go higher if necessary but of course would prefer not to!

    Thanks in advance.

I first stopped in the hotel below (Heritage Hotel) 25 years ago when I first worked in the Philippines and I stopped there a few years ago when in the Philippines to give my wife and kids a treat. Its a short walk from the Mall of Asia which is a big plus. I think I booked directly with the company in the link as it was a lot cheaper than the usual sites. The worlds your oyster really, with a budget of £100 a day you can find a very good/safe hotel where you and the missus will be very comfortable.

If you want to spend a few more quid then I can personally recommend the Edsa Shangri-la

St Giles is OK, Glorietta and Greenbelt shopping within walking distance.
Just a warning though, Makati is a red light district..

I stayed at The Red Planet Amorsolo Makati. Couldn't fault it, and reasonably priced for central Makati

    Look Here

£250 a week in late January.

£100 would give you a very good near 5-star hotel.
If you are on a budget, i've stayed at prince plaza 2 for around £50 a night. its a 5-min walking distance from greenbelt (and other malls which is connected to each other) which i like a lot for shopping and restaurant choices. Once you are inside the mall, you have access to the metro as well but it is business central. Check tripadvisor for more reviews and photos but it is a basic room with wifi.

Stayed there when i was working for E&Y (to pinoys its SGV which is steps away).

Not sure that it is an over all red light district. If makati is a 'red light district', not sure how would you call a place 'worse' like ie Malate? ;)

I think there is always one 'red light' area in a certain city and makati have them at P Burgos st so better avoid it and stick to the family friendly places.

No he's right, the north end of Makati Ave is a red light district, Malate is actually mostly fine, we used to live there, Ermita on the other hand is not.

The second Red Planet entry in your link is right in the middle of the red light district, the first Red Planet entry is on the safe side of Salcedo Village.

I booked into a SOGO hotel in Malate, but after checking it out on Google streetview, quickly cancelled it - there were bars across the street from the hotel which promised all kinds of oriental delight.

I booked the Red Planet Amorsolo on Urban Ave. Honestly - what a great hotel! Ice cold aircon, a real mattress, plump pillows and a 7-11 downstairs. Wi-fi in the rooms and in a business lounge downstairs. Friendly staff and everything spotlessly clean. And cheap! Less than £40 a night for a double room right in the centre of Makati.

We spent most of our time travelling between the hotel and the Spanish Consulate, so exploring the area wasn't top priority, but the Ayala triangle park was nearby and a real oasis in among the towers.

It is my understanding that the SOGO's are pretty much all right next to bars, I've never been in one but they appear to be the cheapest thing going apart from shared hostels.

The P Ocompo end of Malate was a nice place to live close to Roxas Blvd and the Marina and meant you could go for a nice walk along Baywalk and Harrison Plaza was close by. Remidios circle was not too far away and there were a lot of nice restaurants and pubs there but of course if you ventured too far towards Ermita it began to get very seedy.

The SOGO was £25 a night which, by my reckoning would be about £23.50 more than I would have wished to pay. The trip advisor reviews rated it slightly higher than Strangeways prison, (perhaps because the cockroaches were considered free protein). It was on Mabini, opposite the Stancia club, which has a playboy bunny as a logo, and the first love karaoke bar.

I gave it a wide berth and booked in at the Red Planet Amorsolo. Good decision

Yeah the northern end of Mabini Street is a bit dodgy, I think of that as being Ermita although maybe not strictly correct geographically, although once upon a time the old Hobbit House pub was in that part of Mabini close to Remidios, then they moved it north deeper into the dodgy bits, Freddie Aguilar also had a pub in that area, there were a lot of nice places sprinkled between the seedy bits but in general Malate was a good place to live.

edit: I think it is the SOGO's that are rentable per hour, which says it all really, you dodged a bullet.

Here I am, looking forward to staying in Sogo when I come back for a holiday. Hahaha...

    I'm really a cheapskate.

With all due respect... nonsense. I have stayed at Sogo many times. Have you ?

Yes, you can rent from 3 or 4 hours, up to 24 hours at a time... which can be very convenient if just wishing to break your journey, wait for a bus, etc.

Yes, it is known to be a 'short-time' hotel.

That does not mean that it is necessarily disreputable, unpleasant, dangerous or dirty. The ones I have stayed at have been none of those things.

There is no 'chance' to it.

At Sogo you will find a perfectly normal, clean, civilised hotel, with efficient staff, and quiet comfortable rooms, with free wi-fi.
