Makati is the CBD ("Central Business District") of Metro Manila. Banks, stockbrokers, expensive lawyers, etc. And some VERY plush residential districts.

Yes there is a "red light district" in Makati, and, should you wish to visit "old style" "girlie bars", with young lovelies cavorting in bikinis to loud music, ask your cab driver for P. Burgos* Street, Makati. Should you prefer a quieter pick up joint, go to Cafe Havana in Greenbelt and "table" the lovely of your choice (but be sure that "she" is a "she" before you conclude a deal with her!) You could do just the same in the West End of London (but probably at higher prices - I've never tried!)

The rest of it is a mixture of high rise and slums, all presided over by the Binay dynasty.

    * Which is a bit tough on Padre Burgos, one of the three Filipino Catholic Priests executed by the Spanish in 1872, and most definitely a national hero:

I used to live in Makati. In rather a nice studio apartment, in Greenbelt, which cost 20K pesos a month, and was handy for restaurants, cinemas and of course malls. Not to mention the then favourite English pub, the Prince of Wales. Considering that I didn't need to run a car, the 20K rent was a good saving on the 8-10K that one might pay in the outer suburbs.

    This may refresh your memory:

Personally, I am impressed by Graham's knowledge of short time hotels.

That has more to do with my tight-fistedness than the need for a sexual liason venue. :)

I am pretty much an expert on the old Ermita scene, plus Angeles, of course. I've lived my life. Nowt to hide. :like:

I would hasten to add though... my partners, present and previous, have no connection with the redlight areas.

I would recommend this hotel -- Green Sun Hotel Makati

This is also near VFS. LOL. This is where I stayed for 2 nights when I submitted my visa application. I paid PHP 3,740 for 2 nights. I paid 10% online for reservation and the rest was paid in the hotel.

I like the place -- clean (I'm very particular with cleanliness) and decent. Price is reasonable and with free wifi. :)

That's a very reasonable price for Makati.

Yep I was lucky to avail their early bird promo last year. The regular price usually ranges from PHP2,450 up, depends on the room and if you're lucky enough to avail a promo. This is also a new hotel (2014 if I'm not mistaken) so things and all are still somewhat "in good condition". Another good thing is you can walk to VFS (about 500 meters I think) from this hotel. Worth it. :D

I'm sitting laughing at these exchanges as I ssit on the Jubilee line (passing Boston Manor) en route to LHR terminal 5. When a young pup I did the rounds of go-go bars in Edinburgh. Three records on the juke box and the bra came off as the final 45 ended. Not my cup of Darjeeling these days - and bit dubious if your into gender politics!

Looking forward to getting through security and into departure lounge - flight leaves in 90 mins!

Thanks to all for help and good wishes as I visit the Philippines for the first time - it's very comforting knowing I'm in the company of some old-stagers! :)

If you're on the Jubilee Line, you're not going to end up at Heathrow! You are - or should be - on a Piccadilly Line train!

Boston Manor is on the Piccadilly line, so as long as he put the wrong line instead of the wrong station he'll be fine!

Ha - as a certain Home Guard Captain once said. "Well done Pike - you spotted my deliberate mistake..."

Quite right sir - I was on the Jubilee line before changing.

Currently sitting in a rather pleasant and airy Doha departure lounge. BA flight was almost empty - no more than 40 on a 300-seat plane. I had a rake of 3 seats to lounge on! Good in-flight entertainment console - I tried playing asteroids / space invaders - then realised I was crap at them in the 80s and nothing's changed since! Nice meal if chicken /rice, veg and coleslaw. Followed by rather tasty chocolate mousse. And yes I did have a couple of gins plus lots of orange juice. Positive experience really.

We stayed in Citadines in Salcedo it wasn't as expensive as the posh hotels in Makati but it is spacious & very neat - when I say neat, believe me.
Oh, and they have a swimming pool you can enjoy.

Salcedo is still a pretty nice part of Makati, a business district and close to Greenbelt, lots of nice (though expensive) restaurants around there :)

A colleague set up in business there in the year 2000, some more recent younger British friends set up in business in that area too a few years back, I quite like the place although I have not visited all that often.

My first trip to Manila so many years ago now was on Emirates and I got the three seats to lounge on experience as well, almost better than business class :D actually really better than business class as the price was miniscule and I got a great sleep :D

Aw the best Gerry, take care and have a great time.
