So now you know bigmac :)

The added bonus that I like is the RC the non EU citizen gets allowing them to more or less travel freely throughout the EU, something I would really like to do with my wife without messing around with visas.

i'm not usually moved to say swear words...but i really do think its taking the piss.

there are UK citizens who cannot--and probably never will--meet the income requirements to bring their loved one over here to live with them.

the only way i could was to sell my house--and incur £1000's of expenditure

yet a EU citizen--exercising his right to live here--can bring his partner over for free.

    shame on you--UK immigration.

Its not "shame on you UK immigration" its a shame we were in the EU, its a EU agreement, nothing the UK Government can do about it until we leave the EU in a couple of years.

But we can avail of it if we were in a EU country. It is our own government that is restricting us with visa rules.

Yes, if we moved to another EU country, which in most of our cases is extremely unlikely.

True but it is available which makes us just as equal as our EU partners, not penalised.

We are penalised. EU people can bring their spouses to the UK free of charge. We can't.

Yes you could. Absolutely free of charge. And you can get your UK Child Benefit payments there too.

Exactly. So we are not penalised if we too avail of the same freedom of movement other EU citizens are doing when they come to the UK. No doubt there is a German guy on German-Filipino (deutsche-filipino.com ;) )complaining that he has to pay for his wifes visa yet the British guy next door got his asawa over to Germany for free.

A German doesn't have to pay to have his wife in Germany. Neither does a British guy living in Germany.

    So far so good.

A German guy living in the UK doesn't have to pay to have his wife live in the UK. A British guy living in the UK has to pay thousands of pounds in fees, tests etc and also face the risk of rejection.

    We are extremely penalised.

this is what i didnt know----EU citizens not having to pay immigration fees in their own country. the whole thing stinks.

i recall in recent months a new member here discussing her situation--having a portuguese ( ? ) boyfriend here.

so--under surinher singh--a UK guy who doesnt meet the earnings rules needs to find which EU country he needs to move to to bring his future partner into--for free. who knows--they might even settle there if the earnings stack up.

Ok it's a fair cop, the German may not have to pay for a visa within his country, I shouldn't have suggested as I don't know their rules.

When you suggested we are penalised you spoke from the perspective as a UK resident, I was referring as an EU national as per Timmers comment that it is the EU that is penalising us, which is not the case.

I agree it's not the EU penalising us. It's the UK.

i think its a prime example of us here in the UK being well and truly shafted by our own government.

i thought it would be right and proper for persons here with a settlement visa from outside the EU to pay fees to bring their family members over-------but to treat UK citizens so disadvantageously compared to fellow EU members is blatantly outrageous.

Yes but it's two different government organisation at work here. UK Vs EU rulings. When i gave Germany as an example that may charge its own citizens for non EU spouse it was just that, an example. There surely are other member states charging their own citizens fonr non EU spouses, surely, in this day and age.

I'm pretty certain that all Schengen countries can bring their spouses free of charge.
