We have several bags Thai Jasmine rice. Breaks my heart every time we go down the local Kashmir Asian food store and heave a sack into the trolley as it is by no means the cheapest.

On the occasions when I've substituted the Jasmine rice for a more reassuringly priced bag of Aldi white rice, I've not had any complaints.

Having relatives with oriental restaurants in the UK I can attest they use jasmine, prince's Harry and William visited one of the eateries, as did cliff Richard and some ginger haired girlband member whose name eludes me, no complaints from anyone.

We bought a 10kg sack of Jasmine rice today. From the Asian store. It was £13.66. It seems to have shot up in price.

But my wife eats it all the time. I have been trying to discourage her from eating rice so she can lose a bit of weight but she is quite addicted to it.

My wife adores this "Imperial Elephant" new crop Jasmine rice she gets from the local Thai store, and I have to admit I am quite keen on it myself, light and fragrant and without the need to add salt at any stage.
It doesn't come cheap, but we are quite happy with it. Rice.jpg

Considering my wife owns a third of a rice farm back home..and worked hard at it when she was still living there...you would think she would be sick of it..but no. We go through 10 k sacks of jasmine like theres no tomorrow. She either gets it from a phili shop along with other treats...or a friend gets her a sack from a wholesalers when he goes there.

I dont care for it...too sticky for my taste. But in any case ive cut my carb consumption as part of a diabetes avoidance diet.

Got one of those a couple of years ago, reduced, from TKMAXX, and never, ever, used yet........
I thought it would help. but her indoors faithfully uses her old and trusted cool-wall rice cooker/steamer.
Fair do's. her steamed "Leche flan" is famous far and wide, within her extended circle of friends...

I just bought a 25 kg sack of that rice in the Phils on Monday along with a more premium sack of Thai Jasmine, the Imperial Elephant 25kg sack was 1080 peso and the other one (same one I bought for the last three weeks) was 1540 peso, the premium rice is about 60 peso a kilo and getting very close to the prices I can get rice for in the UK, when you consider that even 10 years ago rice was available at 16 peso a kilo it's a huge inflationary price hike for Filipino's.

My wife loves the microwaved rice.
It didn't take her long to work out the quantities and times and she said she would not go back to the "old" rice cooker, which we threw away when the microwave method was in action.

I am not an expert but when I used to cook rice in the old rice cooker, having to soak the burnt rice and then cleaning the metal bowl was a real pain in the backside.

Honestly Mike any rice cooker that burns the rice is not a very good one, I've used a Tefal rice cooker I bought 13 years ago constantly and I dread the day it dies, it produces great results every time mostly with Basmati but often Thai Jasmine as well.

I have some of those Sistema gadgets and they are quite good but I don't have the rice one, not sure I would want that amount of steam floating around the flat or the microwave but I have thought about getting one to try.

I think they are probably good when you are only cooking a small amount of rice, I always cook large batches and then split into portions and freeze.

My son who is now 3 inches taller than me eats a ridiculous amount of rice, they always make batches of 4 dry cups of rice in the house which for me would be 8 portions of cooked rice and James adds Knorr seasoning to his rice all the time, I have warned him that this is really bad for him and he understands but can't break the habit.

edit: actually my comment about the steam is silly I use a steamer all the time and probably have far more water floating round than a rice pot would create :D

    Something wrong, somewhere, there..........???

We don't get burning rice sticking anywhere, we don't get burnt rice at all.
    Nice and fluffy every time.
I do admit that I do not like the rice the day after as it dries up, but sometime I stir fry it with various flavourings.

But this is the rice cooker we have. It wasn't cheap when purchased a few years ago, but still going strong.

    I know the feeling.........
    fryer
    toaster
    panini/meat grill
Lavazza Modo Mio espresso machine (mine, all mine...)
    rice cooker
    Coffee grinder (mine , again)
giant electric pan for party pancit cooking
    mini veg chopper
pastry mixer (3 years old, never out of the box)
    microwave
    kettle
    nutri blender
and the usual array of white goods...

she was harping on about getting a dishwasher but told her that I wasn't going to pay for her sister's airfare.

Personally I think that unless one owns a restaurant, a dishwasher is a total waste of money.

If you like Rice seasoning, you can't beat Furikake, which I get regularly from The Japan Centre.

My teenage kids (whose mum is Japanese) grew up on it, and still have it a lot. Our one year old also loves it, either sprinkled on top of some rice or mixed in and made into rice balls.
