Sorry Mike, but I find this guy's videos and views borderline racist and I've watched a good few of them now.

He's effectively complaining that there are a awful lot of Chinese people.

    I don't agree, Jim.
He is married to a Chinese woman and now lives in the USA, after living in China for many years.
He has many Chinese friends still in China.
I think he is just pointing out the terrible laissez-faire attitude of the Chinese Communist Party to tackle many important things, which are impacting the world now.

These are my notes from watching this specific single video.

This is a moment by moment response but I'm not going to record the times, for everyone else just watch the video.

Long time living there, but he's phobic.

Environment costs are true up to a point but no more so than what we did during industrialisation.

    Air quality true.

China did not single handedly cause a massive hole in the ozone layer that's diversion from reality, it added to it but the reality is that the ozone layer is healing, to say otherwise is fiction, this point was an unfounded attack used to bolster the rest of his argument.

Pictures of unending factories, well you can show that in Germany or elsewhere too.

Totalitarian state that can't enforce laws, hmmmm, more likely they choose not to.

Any industrialising country is going to cause harm to the planet, China is trying to leapfrog that by jumping to future power technologies while relying on existing tech to power their industry, they will likely succeed I hope we do as well.
CCP history lesson is a bit late the past is the past what are they doing about the future.

Yes the Chinese people are slaves right now, but more and more of them are getting a western style lifestyle, the real killer is western levels of energy use, China has 1.2 billion people average access to energy is now about 3900 kwh the UK is 4600 kwh. This level of access to power reflects a maturing economy. Per captia energy use int he USA is 11,900 kwh per annum, go figure which one pollutes more.

Yeah it is a top down state, the plebs are plebs and they are exploited what bit of our history wasn't or isn't like that.

Big interlude half way through, poor people and kids walking around, they look like the people in my family, my people in Asia in the Philippines, it's poor they really are poor who could go there and not notice it, it still looks modern but yes the people are poor and they live right there amongst the better off that's the reality of all industrialising countries on the entire planet.

Fishing, well this is a moot point, there are an awful lot of Chinese people and they like fish, god the dish I was served last night was exquisite :) and given that there are a hell of a lot of Chinese people they are going to have a hell of a lot of fishing boats, if you want to say that China is a Malthusian Catastrophe in the making I might agree but shaming them because of their number is not ok to my mind.

Disproportionate fishing, if you publish a video stating something like that it should be backed up with facts, those facts will exist somewhere but his statement is opinion not fact, it is not fact without references and without references he is doing little more than pushing a personal phobic agenda.

Chinese medicine, he might have a point, but they did not rape the planet for their supposed cures a hundred years ago, their reach like the reach of most western states was limited back then, what he's afraid of now is the reach of an industrialised technological China and yes they are probably doing some stupid things but don't imagine that it is all their fault for the loss of species that we see today.

He also uses the medical point to be outright nasty towards the Chinese "it's for people who lack reason or civility" that's racial stereotyping right there and he's clearly upset when speaking these words, at this point the video is pointing the entire blame for animal extinctions at China, it feels like it is excluding everyone else from the party, in other words he is demonising them.

Then he gets back to his real phobia and comes out with stuff that has no grounding in reality, regards Covid-19, this is simply phobic and can be seen in his other videos as well.

He's talking about lack of hygiene, spitting, gobbing, pissing in the streets, that happens in the Philippines just as much, hell it happens here, the implication is that somehow this is going to spread viruses, well the spitting and the gobbing have little chance of that, viruses become non viable within a short time outside a host, pissing will make next to no difference urine is sterile and even if it contains viral material it will be inert pretty quickly.

The picking and prodding of meat products certainly won't help lower transmission rates, that also happens in the Phils, it is a concern but as I keep repeating they've been doing this for a very long time and we have only had two or three instances of cross species viral jumps.

Again this is an attempt to point the finger and find someone to blame it is stereotyping and that is the basis of all racism in my view.

The snide Greta comments show a willingness to take a swipe at any other opinion other than his.

We in the west have exported environmental catastrophe for a couple of hundred years and now he wants to lay all the blame at China's door, nonsense, yes they aren't helping but who are we to point the finger.

Nobody is giving the CCP any kind of free pass, and we should not be giving anyone else a free pass, this targeting is borderline racism Mike, in my opinion.

How about it's time to call out Britain's Bullshit, or Germany's Bullshit or France or the USA or Canada's bullshit we are all guilty when judged by these standards.

He was stereotyping from the viewpoint of his native culture and his middle class status at home, the phobic references to spitting and the likes are from what I hear not that different from South Africa, we trade with South Africa, they are a very substantial part of our business, I've heard horror stories from our guys in continental Africa who have to implement our systems over there.

I don't want to answer a question like this with trite answers which is why I went to the trouble of watching it all again and to note the points that disturbed me, it looks like racial stereotyping shaming and blaming it does not look like rational argument although it cloaks itself in that form.

That's where my original reply came from Mike and this response took a long time to put together.

P.S. I probably have lots of typos in this one and missing punctuation but I will fix that later.

    Wow Jim.
If you can write so much after watching a short video, let me know what you feel after a long movie.
I will take the week off to read it ;);)

I did not dissect the video, as you did, but I do have personal experiences of being in China and, although the country was fascinating, it was also disturbing.

Once I was eating a meal in Sanya, a town on Hainan which is a large island in the South China Sea. I noticed all around the room there was a thick layer of crud at the same height as the table tops and was a little baffled. There were about 100 smartly dressed people eating in this restaurant. At the end of the meal, I watched the waiters wiping many tables and they just swept their wet cloths across the table tops spraying the walls with the leftover food that was on the table. This dried on the walls.
I asked the waiter why and he politely told me something along the lines of "this is China and why would you worry about the food on the walls, it is the food that goes in your stomach that is more important!". I didn't want to have an argument so I agreed with him but I couldn't forget all the food on the walls.

I also saw many women buying rats on the side of the road from men who held about ten in each hand by the tails. The rats all had white powder on their faces and I presumed this was some way to make them sleepy.
I never saw any birds there either and we all knew why - they are shot for lunch or whatever, this was related to us by our interpreters.

I also saw Chinese fishing boats off Sau'di and they were chopping the heads off sharks and letting the rest of the bodies fall into the sea, keeping only the fins.
That really made me sick to the stomach..

I also used to (try to) close my ears in the mornings when I was staying in many places there. The dawn chorus of spitting is beyond anything I have ever heard anywhere else, by a magnitude of 10. I mean, your stomach heaves and heaves.

It is easy to say that Serpentza, the South African man had an axe to grind or was racist but I agreed with almost all of his points.

Now, we have a possible pandemic and we know where it started.
Maybe it could come from anywhere else but there has now been a few outbreaks from China.
They could have originated in other Asian countries but they came out of China.

I had a Singaporean Chinese girlfriend when I was in Singapore and she and her friends really let me know how they feel about Chinese people from the mainland.

They do need to be called out, Trump has been doing it.
They need to put their house in order, in my opinion too.

I feel pretty confident that if you travelled around China for a month or so, you would see so many things that would shock you.
It is on a different level compared to Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, as comparisons in my opinion.

Well, wouldn't you experience a movie moment by moment and experience ideas in your head prompted by that moment to moment experience :)

Ok food on walls, that's a bacteriological issue, but if your customers haven't died the next day well that's not screwing with their business model is it ;)

Rats, well rats like cows and pigs are protein and people are going to eat them, tell me what's wrong with that, a well cooked rat is probably no worse than a well cooked anything.

Do you know why Salmonella is a problem in chickens, not because we don't understand the biology of Salmonella, but because dead Salmonella bacteria break down into a poison, a toxin, you can have a well cooked sterile chicken that is absolutely toxic and poisonous, the proportion of Salmonella bacteria is the problem, small amounts are not a problem, small amounts = small amounts of toxins, large amounts = sickness, nothing to do with sterility but only when sterility actually happens.

Yeah I am not happy about waste if the fishermen are stupid enough to put that much effort into catching something then letting most of the protein go, that is just stupid.

I accept that we westerners feel sickened by their normal day to day lives, yeah I accept that, but judge them on the Science not on our personal foibles.

Yes I would be shocked but it would be western "me" that was being shocked, it would be an emotional response and not a logical response.

I spent yesterday travelling on trains, a guard coughing his guts up minute by minute, passengers behind me sneezing all over the place, people arriving on the train sneezing into hankies that they had just pulled from their pockets and which return to their pockets, meanwhile brushing on me.

People think they understand hygiene but really they don't.

I know your beliefs Mike but it is "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" which is the principle that is guiding me here.

I am just saying that sometimes an almost total neglect of acceptable hygiene standards and eating everything that moves can have deadly consequences, Jim.

At least the China’s National People’s Congress have banned all consumption of wild animal meat and further restricted wildlife trade nationwide.

It will be interesting to see if they will ban spitting in public, as the Singaporean government did.

Spitting in public is gross, as is using chewing gum and spitting it out on the pavement as well, you still see plenty of people clearing their lungs by spitting in the UK.

And spitting would certainly offer a bacterial threat through transmission vectors like insects, birds and other animals.

A bloke that lives in the same building as me smokes, but his rental agreement does not allow smokers so he goes out the back door of the building which is my route down to the car and smokes there, but he also spits on the stairs and it gets gross as the rain can't get access to that location to wash it away.

In the Phils you still see guys peeing in the street.

Interesting images from NASA regards Covid-19 impact on China's air quality.
