    Although many Filipinos abroad seek permanent residency or citizenship in their host countries, others reacquire their Filipino citizenship to enjoy the perks that other Filipinos have.

    Republic Act No. 8225 or the Citizenship Retention Act of 2003 allows Filipinos to re-acquire Filipino Citizenship.

    Citizenship applicants need to pay $50 for overseas application or P2,500 for country-based applications.

    According to the Commission on Filipino Overseas (DFO), by reacquiring one's Filipino citizenship, a person can enjoy the following rights:

    voting (courtesy of the Overseas Absentee Voting Act of 2003);
    owning real properties;
    engaging in business in the Philippines;
    practicing ones profession, with license from the Professional Regulation Commission;
    securing a Philippine passport;
    staying in the Philippines visa-free; residency in the Philippines is not a requirement for those who re-acquire their citizenship;
    running for public office, provided that you renounced your foreign citizenship; and
    enjoying other perks that ordinary Filipino citizens receive.

    The spouse and the children (below 18 years old) traveling with the Filipino citizen re-acquiree are entitled to visa-free entry to the Philippines good for one year, CFO said.

    A ‘new’ Filipino citizen should not worry about taxes in the country.

    The United States and other 34 countries including Australia, Canada, Japan, Italy, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Germany and Spain among others has a treaty against double taxation.

    Under the bilateral agreement, a Filipino who derive his/her income from the listed countries is not required to pay taxes in the Philippines, while taxes paid in the country will be credited in the US and other counties.

    Interested applicants may read CFO’s dual citizenship primer for more details.

    Earlier, the Bureau of Immigration posted that 116,059 former Filipinos have reacquired Filipino citizenship since 2004.

    According to the 2010 stock estimate of CFO, there are 4.423 million Filipinos living permanently outside the country. - VVP, GMA News
