Years ago, I used to drop some change in the homeless hands if I had any in my pocket. It changed all of sudden, when on a Saturday, I took pity on a very dirty and unkempt lady in the 30ies squatting outside poundland, The only coin I had was a 2 pound one, so I donated it with a clear conscience of being able to help someone. We were in town to do some shopping, so in the afternoon before returning to the car park, my good wife decided that she was in a hurry to use the facilities at the Wrexham bus Station. I happened to notice the homeless lady go in at the same time as my Mrs clutching a backpack... About 5 minutes later she comes out all tarted up, as clean and smart as a whistle with car keys in her hand.... So I approached her and demanded my 2 pounds to be returned.. I raised my voice only a little, but I got my money back. Moral of the story, I haven't seen that lady begging in Wrexham again. So in one day I solved one homeless problem.!! The other side of the coin is that I never gave a penny to beggars ever again.
