Very true but the romantic bit is not that important to either of us, we can have a nice family gathering after...it all comes down to time and the less waiting around for paperwork the better. I take it that my wife to be would need the NSO wedding certificate to apply for a Schengen visa to travel to Malta with me? Si there a quicker way of getting this NSO marriage certificate?

I think they hold marriage for hetero couples too.
    Just not civil partnerships.

But better schedule an appointment and see what will happen. Just to be fully sure

    Extract from an email:

    Dear Mr Whewell

    To answer your questions—

§Visa enquiries are handled by UK Visas and Immigration. The consular section of which I am part is unable to help with any visa-related enquiries. Please visit www.gov.uk/visas-immigration for complete information

§The British Embassy does not conduct marriages

Before you pursue the UK visa option, you may want to find out if you could get married in the UK a second time and, if so, what type of visa Melody should apply for. We are unable to give advice on either point.

You may want to consult the Spanish embassy (if you think that would help) or a solicitor to find out if your proposed course of action is feasible.

    Sincerely yours

    Hi Matt

It is only same sex marriages that SOME embassies will conduct. It's fairly straightforward and we are doing it in October actually in Vietnam as its easier for us and I don't want to spend 3 weeks in the Philippines especiallŷ dealing with the embassy.

No it's not discriminatory to hetero couples as you can get married in the Philippines/most places and this will be recognised under Philippine and all UK jurisdictions.
The embassies offer it when there is no facilities for same sex couples to marry, our marriage will be legal for the UK but under Philippine law it's not legal.

The embassy route is not fast and you need to be in the country you're getting married in for over 3 weeks plus all the usual documentation and it costs £250.
