The key part to the definition of history is that it is a documentation. Rewriting is exactly that i.e. rewriting. So tearing down a monument is not rewriting history. Fact.

Check your above definition out.

"History is written by the victors". So said Churchill. The operative word is written. Once you have grasped that point you will understand. Of course you may want to rewrite the definition of history which you are entitled to do but that will remain your definition and yours only.

So to repeat. Pulling down a monument DOES NOT rewrite history.

Totally agree.

Does this mean that those who object to certain aspects of our past have free licence to remove or destroy monuments to those events? We we see war memorials torn-down, for example?

God forbid...But these days it seems,anything is possible.
Just feel sorry for my kids,thats all.
Teach them all I can while they still listen...It`s all I can do.

Often our kid's horizons are broadened in a way their parents or their parents parents never were. Many these days go on to university, mix in with a wide range of youngsters from a variety of countries, backgrounds, disciplines and creeds and come home one day and say, "come on dad, don't talk rowlocks" and so often they can be correct. And we have to take that on the chin.

And don't rule out the possibility of them marrying a young, handsome and wealthy ....... left leaning individual with a social conscience.

If they do that,then it`s fine...

My personal view is that some monuments might in different times and for various reasons need relocating from public space as public awareness changes and Im happy that this debate can now happen no "tearing down" or "destruction" just considered removal to less in your face locations where they can be chosen to be viewed from all perspectives.
