Seems as if there is quite a problem with Dengue fever at the moment. I know there have been issues in Leyte recently as I have heard mention of a few people being infected, it is apparently now a national problem.

    Summary:
Philippine health authorities have declared a national Dengue alert. Since January there have been over 106,630 cases of Dengue reported, an 85% increase since last year, and there have been over 450 related deaths.

We often hear about new technologies to wipe out mosquito populations but rarely are there follow up stories.
    Like this.

Fungus with a venom gene could be new mosquito killer

    Or this.

Oxitec to Apply New Generation of Self-Limiting Mosquito Technology to Malaria-Spreading Mosquitoes

It`s a mystery to me why health departments in the R.P are not begging these companies to trial this tech here.

Its a relatively low mortality rate the old and very young most at risk along with the very poor.

As I recall Dengue is carried by a daytime mosquito

Yes, I believe that Dengue and Chikungunya are supposedly spread by a daytime mosquito whereas Malaria is spread by a nighttime mosquito.
