Now this is interesting and weird news..

The FBI in the US have shut down the Tor website Silk Road, arrested the alleged owner and confiscated millions worth of bitcoins:oops:

For those who don't know, Silk Road was (or is) a trading site for illegal stuff. From drugs, hitmen and even guns (though I've been told the guns moved to a different site).

Even stranger is the alleged owner was also alleged to have tried hiring a hitman to knock off a former employer:eek:

And you think we have dramas on this website ;)

Arrested in a library? Must have been scary for other library users.

So is possession of Bitcoins a criminal offence, or is this just the FBI overplaying its hand?

Hope they don't hit Paypal next, I have a 400 GBP balance on there...

Possession of bitcoins is not a criminal offence per se but this was money earned illegally. Bitcoins are subject to wide variations in value against other currencies and the closure of a large website who solely trades in bitcoins could hit the value of the bitcoin pretty hard.

A lot of small time drug dealers will now have no supplies of drugs they have paid upfront for.

When the FBI finally cash in those bitcoins that could also adversely affect the value of bitcoins too.
