I may be in the minority in thinking this but I reckon that some people are making too much fuss on negating the obvious.

We are in a pandemic, we cannot see the light at the end of this very dark tunnel, and a lot of people do not want to sacrifice a little bit of personal liberty and freedoms to ensure that everyone or mostly everyone has a chance to survive.

The Government is actually paying the vast majority to stay at home, safely ensconced within one's trusted 4 walls, and in return is asking to follow the suggestions or obey the rules laid down for the short time.
    It can save people's lives.

    No.
Idiots want to go out and about, drinking, partying, raves, as it is their lawful right, I suppose.
But not a thought is spared to the poor wretches they may infect and bring to an untimely end.

Although Wales is open, we only go out for groceries on Tuesdays and Saturdays, early morning, like we have been doing since March, as after 10 am queues start forming.

Why don't they just stay home, safe and sound instead of wanting to go to the Pub, restaurant, disco, blah, blah,

My 2 pence worth of OAP grumpiness now exhausted.

    Nothing else to see here.

    This was not a rant.

My wife wanted to go to "the range" today..to get some xmas decs. I said it would be closed..so i checked online first ( its a 28 mile round trip )..and it was open. Which begs the question..WHY?? The place is a sh1t hole. It sells rubbish..and very few xmas decs. Yet Argos..next door..was closed. Also. Our main hardware store..a real go to for everything household..was shut completly. However..a grossly overpriced fashionable garden center..has stayed open. None of it makes any sense.

We can see the light Dom, there are three working vaccines, and even the least effective one the Oxford vaccine has 70% level of protection and you can bet that is the one that the plebs get as it is cheap :D

I would be worried about getting the Pfizer vaccine as one could not be assured that the cold chain had not led to spoilage, the Moderna vaccine looks great high effectiveness 95% and no unusual cold storage requirements but the encouraging thing about the Oxford vaccine is that in the control group who got a placebo some people got hospitalised and got very sick, whereas of those in the group who received the actual vaccine, but who still got still sick, none of them got hospitalised.

That rule probably applies to all three vaccines but the Oxford team specifically analysed their data to make that point probably as the results only came out at 70% but any vaccine that is likely to provide 6 months or more protection is the light at the end of the tunnel the only issue now is living long enough to get both doses as they are all two dose vaccines and you're not protected until a specific time after the second injection.

So lets say they get down from the NHS staff and the top end age groups to my age group by late Jan early Feb, then I would start to relax in the third week of March.

    4 months is nothing.

But I agree the country is full of selfish pricks that will do their utmost to kill as many people as possible during the next 6 months, the current lockdown is leakier than the last one and should have remained in place until the start of January then we would be back down to last summer levels of infection, but no politics says they have to let people have Christmas so the Tiers will be leaky as hell.

edit: spoke a bit too soon there are doubts about the Oxford vaccine trial now that I have just read, these doubts might prevent approval of the Oxford vaccine until errors in the trials are fixed which will take time possibly a lot of time.

The issue relates to the statistical effect of the error in dosage given to a subset of volunteers in the UK compared to the part of the trial which was performed in Brazil.

It seems that some firms are open where others are not, and it smells of backhanders to me

The doubts about the Oxford vaccine trial is a setback.
Let's hope they can get back on track quickly.

That was a report in New Scientist Mike, I only read it yesterday I will keep everyone up to date on developments, New Scientist is generally good at reporting recent current developments, most of the BBC Science and Technology stories originate from New Scientist.

I would love to read "New Scientist", Jim.
Now that I am mostly retired, I will concentrate on "National Geographic" soon.
I have been collecting them since my first born arrived into our world.
It has been a struggle hiding them away from their pens, scissors and other implements of destruction :lol:
My son keeps in his memory a long list of things that I have promised him though.
The list is endless as I keep mentioning things to him

I've had subscriptions to National Geographic in the past, fantastic promoters of fine world class photography.

And of course I like quite a lot of the Nat Geo TV content but the society only owns 27% in comparison to Disney's 73% share.

Yeah kids can be a disaster for collectibles :D but lovely that your son wants that long list :)

Yeah, I often think "Why did I mention that?" but the love of our children is the greatest love of all :like:
