My wife did need to apply when she travelled with me to Spain. I am / was a UK national with a British passport.

She was a Filipino national on a Spouse visa in a Filipino passport.

It is actually a formality really. The difficult bit is travelling to the embassy or consulate. And then waiting a week. They dont seem to accept online or postal applications these days.

I think (I could be wrong) that the UK BRPs do not state that the holder is a family member of an EU/EEA National (they clearly ask for this), I think we have had this discussion before.

Looking at my wife's BRP it just says spouse partner leave to remain, nothing on there saying she is family of a EU National which I think is crucial.

Shengsei, wait to see what the others say on the subject :)

Yes. This one has cropped up before. My wife doesnt have a BRP card so it wouldnt come into our application.

Just checked my wife's Residence Permit.

    It says UK and spouse/partner

So it doesn't state "literally" that she is a family member of an EA national. for that, I think, you would possibly need an EAA Family Permit. I think you can get one if you are in UK, but I'm not sure if it covers you as EAA national as UK opted out of Schengen.

It's a tricky one, isn't it. My guess is it could easily depend on which border guard you get when you go to Spain!

Its about time the UK opted into to Schengen, it would be very easy indeed for the holder of a UK BRP to think that the card covers them for EU travel, we have seen that here on the forum.

I don't understand why we aren't in it. It doesn't stop anyone coming here. It just makes it more difficult for people here to travel into Europe.

Yes. And you wouldnt want to leave it to chance.

I can testify that they do check as you arrive. They checked my wifes passport thoroughly and asked for proof of marriage ( we had the marriage cert with us) so they arent dummies.

Its a lot of hassle. So this year we arent venturing into Europe until Mrs Ash gets citizenship.

This is the problem, I don't mind holidaying in the UK but you don't get value for money here, much better deals to be had elsewhere in Europe and of course the weather is more dependable.

Exactly. Our foray into the Lake District was okay but it was cloudy and cold (June). Though a week later in North Wales it was great. Cant depend on the weather as you say.

Same here. that's why we're off to Weymouth this year instead of going to Germany to visit her sister or having a weekend in Paris. Pain in the backside the whole thing.

Had to google that. A Waterside place, eh? I looked at them, but they only did 7 days and we're doing 5. Ended up booking a place called "Weymouth Bay".

I probably wouldn't have bothered with it, but my wife and kids ket hassling me to take then somewhere again this year.

Yeah. Hidden in a valley close to the beach. Just outside Weymouth.

I stayed at a campsite there.

    Pub called the Smugglers Inn.

I was there on a student budget in 1978. :D

Its a free visa and you can travel freely throughout the Schengan area and if you have a spouse visa under national rules you must apply

If your a family member of a EU Cit ( including Brits who have returned with their families on the singh route)and have an article 10/20 residence card you dont need anything Like Dom and Me

It cost us a lot Keith. The Schengen visa was free but there was an admin charge. And for us it cost us a good few bob getting there and back. Plus stamped addressed Special Delivery envelope.
