Looks reasonably straight forward to me Graham, assuming the child`s birth cert has you named as Father and the birth was registered at the Embassy?
Unfortunately its all got to be done online these days and via DHL back and forth to Liverpool.
The embassies these days are about as much use as a chocolate tea pot.. Useless Twots...Dont even mention the word "Passport" to them if I were you.

My own passport is due for renewal next year.
I'm considering to renew it as soon as I've sorted out some pressing issues here.

I seem to recall they'll credit my next one with up to 9 months extra if I apply that far ahead.

I think the renewal extension to passports were a temporary measure to help them through the back log problem..No idea if it is still in effect?
The problem the HMPO leave us with is an indefinite period of time with no travel document that contains a visa that we are supposed to show officials here if required..
The only thing we can really do is to get a few colour photo copies with evidence that we have sent the original for renewal.

Have you found a place in Malta yet Mark? I used to live there and if I were to go back there to live, I'd find a place in the south of the island where its not so crowded or built up (places like Siggiewi, Qrendi, Rabat).

Not yet, Rob. I've booked us into the Sliema Hotel in Sliema(!) for a week which I think overlooks the waterfront and over to Valletta. We should be able to get a place for around 400 Euros outside the central area.

The south sounds perfect but we'd need to be near a convenient bus route to wherever Mae is working.

What I find confusing about applying for a CHILD's (in fact... baby !) first passport is where they are referring to YOU. Obviously it can't refer to a baby who is a few months old !

To whom are they referring ? The mother ? The father ? The non-Brit parent ? The Brit parent ? Presumably the one who is signing the form. What about countersigning of the child's photo ?

Damned idiots need to read back their own stupid forms, which are appallingly written and unclear.

I would have applied weeks ago if I was confident that I could supply what the hell they are looking for.

It is also unclear which documents (passport bio pages for instance) need to be originals and which can be copies. I will certainly not be sending my passport off anywhere.

Thanks for the advice anyway Boots. I am identified as the father on all of the 'official' Phils documents.

Which days? My wife has an application being processed in Beijing at the moment. We are hoping that she might know by Tuesday, but clearly this could be a spanner in the works

I lived in a waterfront apartment in Sliema for 3 months. Fantastic.
Then moved to Mellieha which was very very quite in those days.
Still, there was a regular and pretty convenient bus schedule.
The buses were great fun :D

They shaked, rattled and rolled. Shame they got rid of them and to be replaced by Kens bendy buses from London. They didn't last long either, there's videos on utube of these things getting stuck in Malta's narrow streets.

No thanks to VFS Global but I'm happy to report that our son's Passport with replacement Visa is with DHL, has arrived in Manila and should be delivered to us in Davao later today or tomorrow.

On Wednesday, I managed to get the contact details for the Visa issuing department at the Malta Embassy in Beijing to whom I wrote a plaintiff email. Daniel Sammut, Second Secretary and Consul at the Embassy, replied within the hour to inform me that he had located the Passport, which had only just been delivered to the Embassy, and he had issued instructions that it be given priority treatment; it was currently with the Immigration Police for vetting and security clearance, he said. In my reply, I told him of our predicament - that we're flying on Tuesday and that it's Holy Week, blah-blah - and asked if he could return the Passport direct to us rather than via VFS. Yesterday he emailed me around midday to tell me that the Visa has been re-issued and that DHL would deliver the Passport to us in Davao; he gave me the air waybill number so we could track the shipment.

Since it appears to take less than 24 hours for DHL shipments between Beijing and Manila, even accounting for the fact that they have a stopover in Hong Kong, it is highly likely that VFS did not send my son's Passport last Friday as they claimed (as it would have arrived at the Embassy on the following Monday at the latest) but waited until late Monday or Tuesday. And that's despite their written undertaking to give it top priority.

Wow! What a refreshingly different attitude the Maltese diplomats have towards those seeking their help. Had my contact been with the British Embassy, I know from experience that I'd still be waiting for a reply to my initial email. The language used "no problem", "our pleasure" and "you're very welcome" go a long way to promote friendliness and I do hope that this is a foretaste of what we can expect in the future. At 122 square miles - about the same area as Samal and under half that of Singapore - Malta is the smallest country in the EU; as the saying goes "small is beautiful".

    Well done Malta!

I went to Malta once and Gozo and found it to be awesome a place really beyond belief, people friendly, weather great, the buses were fun to ride in and cheap the beer if I recall was blue or red hopleaf(1982 when I was there) cars a throw back to the 60s. After a week and half drinking the stuff was ready for teetotal beliefs. Great place

My brother was Deputy High Commissioner to Malta at one time. :)

My mum attended school there when she was a child, and dad did several tours of duty there when he was in the RN. Never been myself. It always looked a bit barren... and I like leafy places. :)

As a child whose parents lived in Libya, Malta was always the nearest place for a holiday and my parents almost retired there. The election of Dom Mintoff caused a re-think on my mother's part. I was last there thirty odd years ago and I recollect walking down the Gut stepping carefully over prone and unconscious Libyan naval ratings who had just discovered why the Prophet disapproved of alcohol!

    Time flies!

We've been here on Malta for three months and it's now mid-summer and just as hot by day as Davao though less humid. Whilst the Maltese are charming and just as friendly as they were three months ago, some of the (non-Maltese) Europeans are now, post-Brexit referendum result, openly hostile towards the British. There have been several nasty attacks by eastern Europeans against elderly British residents in mainly in bars and abusive anti-British sentiment is not uncommon amongst the sizeable number of 16-19 year olds on organised "educational" tours.

As I am almost 66, my Residents Permit will have to be on the basis of "Retired"; the Maltese authorities (and British, apparently) require proof of liquid assets exceeding €300,000 for an application based on "Self-Sufficiency". If your application is to be based on being employed, that won't be so easy as you must obtain clearance to work here (ie a work permit) as local employment law positively-discriminates in favour of Maltese nationals. Those who are self-employed need to produce a minimum of twelve months' trading accounts and a nett income of at least €1,000 per month. This information is current as of last week and originates from an official of the government department that issues Residents Permits and ID cards.

Retired British citizens and their dependents are entitled to a Maltese ID card which includes entitlement to free health care, free education and permit-less employment. However to qualify, retirees must obtain "SI Form" from the Pensions Service for themselves and their dependents; two copies are required. No, I don't know what it is either and there's no mention of it on the Pensions Service web site. This concession is only available to British-born, full Passport holders and is in addition to, but separate from, any EU or EEA acquired rights.
