We don’t. My wife sends £400 a month home to her mother. But her mother never spends it. My wife’s mother works and so do her two sisters. They never ask for a penny / peso.

It’s my wife’s own money so I have no real say in the matter.

My predecessor paid for him to get a degree in Hospitality and Catering. He didn't use it.

I saw it in a slightly different way: when I found out that my wife's younger brother wanted to go to work in Saudi Arabia (another man in the family had done this) but couldn't buy a passport, I sent money over for this. He wasn't skilled in a profession and his education wasn't developed but I knew agencies over there would get the ball rolling if they got their cut.
He has been over to Saudi many times now and is a man rather than a boy and he has been sending remittances to his parents all the time.

Yes, that doesn't add up when we all know how Filipinos constantly seek opportunities overseas to give themselves and their families a step up the ladder. From what I saw, most OFW (or wives who moved away) wanted to be seen to have improved their lot, especially in the eyes of their peers.
