Yes I have - both egg and broiler units and I agree there can be welfare issues. Personally, I would subscribe to Compassion In World Farming / RSPCA's "Freedom Foods" and the activities of the Farm Animal Welfare Council. I work professionally in agriculture policy and work with senior inspectors in the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. I'm not vegetarian but I care passionately about the welfare and husbandry of farmed animals from birth to slaughter. If you think pitting animals - cockerels / dogs or any other creature against one another is in any way justifiable then we simply don't share the same moral compass. It is a revolting, disgusting practice and those who perpetrate - either directly as owners or indirectly as gamblers should be jailed.
I agree with your views on the cruelty. It might be unwise to openly express such views in the Phils though.
Cock fighting is highly Legal here in the Philippines.. There is even a cock fighting (Sabong) channel on local TV!! The only people going to jail here would be animal rights protesters outside delaying the next fight!
I think I am with Alfie. The life of a Filipino cockerel is a life of utter avian luxury, he is fussed over, fed the best food, carried about and petted by his owner until the time comes for him to do what cockerels do naturally, and after three minutes or so he is either having his neck wrung for the pot or good to go again. It's a better life than a broiler capon...
