Hi everyone! Which is better to send money over the Philippines through online transfer? I am looking more on the security service of the money transfer system because hard earned money should not be scammed by anyone looking through on-going transaction. :)

Well, I used Western Union until I found my WU account hacked - WU took no action.

I then switched to World Remit and I find them efficient, polite and reliable.

@Methersgate Does World Remit provide efficient privacy and security service when doing online money transaction? I am very skeptical on sending money online as there are lots of hackers is snooping around. o_O

Well when I was out in Phil last and we live outside of the city's, I was using them to send money out because the cost was much lower then that of ATM's, they phoned my mobile to check that it was myself before sending anything, they also phoned my wife to confirm, so far they have been very good and am more then happy with them, only downside is they always send offers out to me when I don't need them, that is why I put them here, may help someone who needs to send.

I think it is only worth using World Remit when they have a discount on their normal rates. They are actually more expensive than Western Union - with higher fees and less favourable exchange rates. I think that is why they have so many 50% discount offers!

I think any reputable money sender registered with the Financial Conduct Authority will have secure procedures in place. World Remit certainly use an extended validation certificate for their SSL encrypted connection as evidenced by the green highlight in the URL bar. But there are some weaknesses in their SSL connection which can be seen by checking the website...

    https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?&d=worldremit.com

You will note the 'B' rating for the website since it does not support 'forward secrecy' on some browser/OS combinations - check the report to see if it supports forward secrecy for your browser/OS combination; if it does, I think your browser/OS combination should be secure though there is a slight worry as they do not used TLS 1.2; they don't even use TLS 1.1 - the best they use is TLS 1.0.

In any event, the World Remit website is more secure than westernunion.co.uk which has only a 'C' rating as Western Union does not support Forward Secrecy with any browser...

    https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?&d=westernunion.co.uk

You can check if Forward Secrecy is on for your browser/OS by clicking on the padlock in the URL bar and the clicking on 'Connection'. If the letters 'DHE' appear within the key exchange mechanism then forward secrecy is enabled - you have to check this for each HTTPS website. Forward Secrecy is important as it means a unique encryption key is used for each encrypted connection to that website. If the same key is used for every connection then it is possible to decrypt any connection to that website after the event, should the encryption key ever be discovered in the future.

Interesting to note that the Google Search engine is actually more secure than either World Remit or Western Union websites as it has a Grade 'A' rating in the Qualsys Lab Tests. It has forward secrecy on all reference browser/OS combinations.

So, in short, if you want to use any financial website check that site at: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest. If it is grade 'A' or 'A+' you have no real worries. If it is leas than 'A' check to see why. If it is only lower than 'A' because Forward Secrecy is not supported on all the reference browser combinations but your browser/OS combination does have forward secrecy enabled on the site then you should feel safe to use that site.

I hope the explanation is not too esoteric!

Historically Western Union have been massively more expensive than anyone else, and they still are, if for example I had to send 100 GBP to Korea it would cost me 9.80 + a 5.3% exchange rate loss, the only reason they are cheap to the Philippines is the current no fee and excellent exchange rate policy which is bound to be temporary.

My fiance uses World Remit for 4 years now. Before, it took us 3 business days for the money to be in my account. Now, just a few clicks and it's there!:like:

Has you say I had internet banking and doing all the work and my bank had the nerve to charge me £17 a go, now £4.99 like you say and in a few hours and not three days min.

I've just had a look on their website and yes it's secured. I'd be very surprised at any internet site conducting business with money (indeed any site using your personal information for that matter) without any SSL these days. If they do then don't use their services.

Yes, it does use SSL and, according to the QualSys tests, the Azimo site is more secure than World Remit, as it achieves an 'A' grade, compared to World Remit's 'B' Grade.

Well that's Western Union back to charging fees, their exchange rate is still a little better than WorldRemit and the fees are not yet back to their full fees that they charge elsewhere, but there is not a lot of advantage now in using Western Union, only 36 pence difference in the transfer of 2400 peso that I want to make today and WorldRemit gets it there to a bank account quicker.
