There are checks and balances in place to ensure it doesn’t happen. Our water supply is metered, incidentally.
Miss R has been in the UK (Bury in the NW) for 11 days. She has drunk apple & mango juice, milk, prosecco and bucket loads of tap water. She has not been ill yet.

I have drunk tap water in the UK (run it briefly to get fresh water that hasn’t been sitting around in the pipes) for 60 years and it has not done me any harm.

I grew up in a house with lead pipes, maybe my IQ would have been a bit higher if I hadn't drank the tap water for the first 15 years of my life
I'd say it's more likely to be a placebo in Wales but may be not so in London where I'd be rather more concerned and would definitely use a filter jug. Our (Gozo) water comes from deep boreholes into limestone and hence it's very hard and that's the only reason we have a filter jug - for cooking and hot drinks.

Well you have hit upon the exception - lead pipes. I lived in one of those for a few years. But my understanding is that lead has been superseded or replaced in most cases now?
i think its fair to say--anyone moving from one area to another--with a different water chemistry--ph DH etc---can expect a degree of stomach upset for a few days. i swear by loperamide.

Yeah the flat I grew up in was replumbed in the mid 1970s, the lead pipes were forever bursting, luckily (uncle) Alec next door was a plumber, not my real uncle but everybody was your auntie or uncle if you lived in a tenement. My father was a Pharmacist and fully aware of the problems with the lead pipes in the house but it didn't stop him drinking the water.
I bought a 1930s house a good few years ago. The water supply pipe was lead and so were the gas pipes and as you know lead becomes porous over time. I had both pipe systems replaced.
If the chlorine is a bit strong fill up a bottle and let it stand a day or so it will disappear. In Portugal, the water flows continuously from the mountain and is naturally chilled and tastes of ........water
Worst ever tap water I ever experienced was at one of the apartments I stayed at whilst working in Luxembourg City. I needed a Brita jug to remove the calcium from tap water before boiling the kettle. Within a week I had an inline water filter for the shower on order from Amazon, the water destroyed my hair, and I don't have that much left.
As a keen 'Aquarist' since my teens...water quality/chemistry has always been a subject of interest and importance to me. There are some creatures that have to LIVE in the stuff. Your local mains water supplier will be able to give you a comprehensive breakdown of the chemistry of your tap water supply.
me too--in fact my hobby became a job--in an aquatics business. we sold water conditioner to dechlorinate water ready for aquaria or pond use. or--alternatively just run tap water into buckets and leave for a few hours.
