Yes congratulations to France , deserved to win the final . Great that the tournament went well , with none of the problems that some people expected . Congratulations to Gareth and his squad , for doing better than expected . We need to stare building towards the euros now .
I think I even tipped France, if only I put money where my mouth is. I am pleasantly surprised how well the tournament went. Well done to the Russian people. Unfortunately more cash in the corrupt FIFA's coffers to grease palms
Agree. Russia put on a good tournament. There was little doubt they would fail to deliver with stadiums and an enthusiastic fanbase. The political controversies were mostly kept separate from the sport. The main downside was how difficult it was for fans without match tickets to travel (I know that many simply lied on the applications). It is a selfish western viewpoint, but those countries which contribute so much to the game should have easier access to the host country. I still scratch my head at how Qatar is going to deliver an authentic tournament with widespread local support.
Qatar winning is a joke. They will only put on a good competition if they relax their own laws for 4 weeks... and it rains
France's African connections have earned them the tag of Africa's "sixth team" at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and they have an even broader appeal than the five African sides—Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia. In the eyes of many African football fans, France are not just a team full of players with African heritage. They are something akin to a Pan-African football team. As one of four Cameroon-born players to have made it to the World Cup (along with the Swiss trio of Francois Moubandje, Breel Embolo and Yvon Mvogo), Umtiti's performances in Russia have been followed particularly closely in the land of his birth, and there was delight when he scored the goal against Belgium that sent France into the final. https://bleacherreport.com/articles...carrying-africas-hopes-in-the-world-cup-final
Its a funny old thing, national qualification for sport. I am not sure it is even consistent either between nations playing the same sport. Rugby is just a joke now when it comes to national selection.
There are some really mean-minded people around, kill-joys. Transport for London decided to rename Southgate Tube Station for two days at the beginning of this week in recognition of our World Cup team's relative successful campaign under their manager, Gareth Southgate. This celebratory act did not please a certain female tube passenger who was caught removing the new signs:
