I'm impressed and pleased, it will go higher but a wee bit later in the month.

That will be a big help but it's just a shame that it only equates to about 20,000 PHP :( still we are rapidly approaching the net from previous campaigns for them, excellent!

@OSS its not a bad amount for a weeks work and its a Christmas fund main thing is they get money for value out of it. Adding to that also good to see so many people here giving a damn about others, I have often found people bicker about helping others if they should or not which then gets away from the purpose. Had it in the UK where people say "we should help our own first" and I follow it up with "what charities did you donate to this year?". Normally get a long pause as they try to think of a name, point being often the critics had no intention of giving in the first place. Nice to see on here though so many people have donated but also remember this is a Christmas fund not a legal representation pot. Which to be honest I would question anything on that side simply because I have seen how lawyers in the Philippines (like anywhere else on the planet) will milk a case for all its worth.

Just happy in the knowledge people have done something here that shows the British-Filipino community functions as one and for the better good.

As I put in the first post, if we got to £100 then I was doubling it. But that was my limit.. So in other words I'm donating £100 on top of the total. Almost to £400 already... That will come in very handy to the Taylors!

If it makes the Taylors Christmas that little bit more bearable, and makes them feel that they haven't been abandoned by all and sundry, then it will have been worth it.:like:

I'm looking forward to sending this off in a few weeks, I read Kevin Taylor is in need of some glasses, hopefully he might get some with this money.

That's one of the thing's I'm getting done myself over there soon, new good pair of glasses, Kevin's been in need of glasses for a long time he had problems when I visited him too, the good news is that a good paid of glasses over there doesn't cost much.

Now here is something to find out, I know his eyesight issues are custom but when he mentioned to me he was really saying that reading was the problem, he tries to read to pass the time I think and finds that hard these days, we could try to ask his dad if he could guesstimate a reading glasses factor, me I'm on 1.5X I suspect from what he said when I was there that he would be on a lot more, but something close would likely help him a lot and would cost very little in the UK. If I know roughly what to get then I will a pair for him myself and take them over. I've not seen the same kind of off the shelf reading glasses over there but I might have been looking in the wrong places? Januarius any ideas mate?

Reading glasses are available from many department stores in the Philippines in strengths between 1.25 and 2.75 and cost around 500 Pesos.

Thanks Mark, I've looked for them in the past but could not find anything, which department do they tend to be near, some of those stores tend to be pretty big? :)

Eight quid is similar to UK prices though so that is good.

Regards glasses for distance I had a great set of varifocals with photochromatic and ultra lightweight lenses made over there about 7 years ago for 150 quid, same thing here was over 500 quid, sadly I lost them three years later on my way through the x-ray machine on entry to NAIA :(

Just look for the display of sun-glasses and that's where you'll also find reading glasses, Jim. I don't know about Manila but I've certainly seen them in SM both in Cebu and Davao. The Department store in Ayala, Cebu, also stocks them - and last time I looked, had a greater selection available than SM.

I also had a pair of varifocals made with Christian Dior frames and Zeiss lenses for less than 200 quid about 3 years ago by Reyes Opticians in Ayala (Cebu). They're not photochromic though, that option would have added another 50 quid or so but then the lenses wouldn't have been optical glass which I prefer.

I was in the PoundShop today and noticed they were selling reading glasses for £1; did not look at the strengths available though. They may use different units in the Philippines to measure the strength. There is a simple formula that relates magnifying power to dioptres...

    Magnifying Power = (dioptres/4) + 1.

When I look back at the source report of Kevin's eye issues the suggestion is that he might need custom glasses so it might not be the best thing to guess at after all.

I buy my reading glasses here for 50 PHP each.. They usually only last for about 6 months but for that price who cares.
They can often be found in small shops that have a sunglasses stand.. Lots of different grades available.
