wife has a filipino licence and a international licence
i know you can only use both for a year, but then what do you do
does she have to apply for a provisional licence here, or can she just change for a UK Full licence
on the form to apply for a licence it has as one of the options. To exchange my non uk licence for a GB licence
so will this apply to a pinoy , or like all from the philippines they have to go the long option

She has to apply for a provisional licence.

She can drive for one year on her international licence.

A Chinese colleague of mine drove to the test centre on his international licence, failed the test, started to drive home and was arrested by an over zealous copper for "driving without a licence" just because he had failed the test.

After MUCH effort on my part and that of our lawyers, the police dropped the matter.

An international drivers' licence (IDP) is NOT required by anyone whose national licence is in English or contains translations into English of all required details. That applies to using Philippine licences in the UK and British licences in the Philippines.

Indeed. There is no credible driving test here and yet Philippine Licence holders can drive on British roads for up to a year. The UK does have quite a rigid driving test and yet British Licence holders may only use that for up to 90 days commencing on the date of their FIRST arrival in the country.

    What?

So I can't rent a car in the Philippines then and drive on my British licence next time I visit as a tourist?

That 90 day limit is common in lots of countries and applies to residents being present in country. Not visitors. The idea of a Filipino driving in the UK on their licence for any time, never mind one year, is ludicrous and dangerous. Suggest you get her professional tuition lest she kill someone or herself.

she hs ben driving for over 6 months here now , and she could drive in pi, and yes it was only when I went to fill in the provisional licence that I saw the To exchange my non uk licence for a GB licence
    so that's why I asked
she has never had an accident in pi or here, so its not always ludicrous, and yes I was sitting with er for the first few weeks , only due to the drifferant driving conditions, but after one month she was as compedent here as she was in pi
she been studying the theory test and you can not take the test without a provisional licence, its all about money. she can drive fro a year but can not take a test without a pro lic, how does that work if its not about money

she needs to get a provisional license and take the practical and theory test like everyone else. It's about safety and driving standards.

That is what the law says but in practice it doesn't apply to short-stay visitors.

    i agree
I agree, but anyone from a European country and from some others do not have to take the test
so safty and driving standards only apply to a few, because our signs and driving on the right is completely different from any other country, so as I totally agree she needs to comply with the regulations here, I also belive that ALL coming here should do the test, not a few from selective countries

agreed that it seems inconsistent but that's due to European law. I had to take the NY drivers test when I lived in the USA and it's irritating. I feel that the standards in the Phils though are so dire that in this case it's an essential safety filter.

It's EACH arrival. Somebody can go to the Philippines, stay for 90 days, go to Singapore for the weekend, come back to the Philippines and repeat the process for 20 years and they still won't need a Filipino licence if they never stay in-country for longer than 90 days and even if they have driven a vehicle in the Philippines for thousands of days in total.

The thing is, if you chuck a bit of money in the right direction in The Philippines you can get a driving licence without ever taking a proper test.

It's only fair that a Philippines licence shouldn't be transferable here.

Even if you do everything officially and by-the-book in the Philippines, it's still not a proper driving test.

You do not need to bribe anyone in the Philippines to obtain a driving licence.

When we married ten years ago I thought was a good idea for my wife to get a non professional DL. Through a relative she got the provisional and then a month later she got a full non prof DL. She also got an International Drivers Permit, NOTE that is not a DL in any sense, one cannot drive with just that in any country, it just a translation of one's national DL.

We the came to Spain where my home was.

She was not permitted to drive in Spain with her Phil DL but after a few years Spain approved the EU agreement to allow Philippines DLs to be exchanged for a national DL. I believe only a few EU countries so far have agreed.

So my wife has a full Spanish DL but cannot actually drive. In Spain a person learning to drive or practicing can only so with a Driving School, but as she has a full DL I can teach her to drive.

PS For those who say that a person should not be able to change their national DL for say a UK one: Having spent 35 years driving in Central London and having spent some time in Manila, see would think that if one can drive in Manila driving anywhere else would probably be a doodle.

PPS Pip Taylor, just to let you know, about 35% of the world countries drive on the left.

PPPS. As I believe probably most, if not all countries allow visitors to hire vehicles using their National DL, so they drive for a while in that country, it seems ridiculous that those same people are not allowed to exchange their DLs for a UK, Spanish etc, etc one.

For the Philippine driving license, is it valid for a year from arrival date in UK or when I got my spouse visa?
My husband is now trying to book me driving lessons, what was your experience booking lessons for your wife with just international license? One tutor suddenly said he is retiring next year after learning I only have phils license and now referring me to another tutor o_O
Is it true my car insurance will be expensive since I'm on international license and no driving experience in UK? How much did you pay for your wife's insurance?
    Thank you.
