Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember that some phones, in particular Samsung's, won't work if they are a European model and outside of Europe.

I thought that the problem was more with using different networks in the USA.

My unlocked (antique) HP UK phone and Philippine purchased Samsung Galaxy tablet have worked OK with Philippine, Thai, Egyptian, and UK sim cards in the past.

Yep, just need to be multiband phones... which British ones normally are (and unlocked.)
It's the U.S . spec ones that can be problematic.

My Nokia Lumia works fine in the Phils, with the local SIMs or my Tesco one. Also can use the free Facebook and Messenger there.

If you are near civilisation, go to the nearest Globe Store and give your phone to them. Just play the dumb foreigner routine. I do it all the time when I try to understand all the permutations and different products for buying load.

Hand over the phone, pop outside and buy a coffee or donut. They'll tinker with the settings and have it working by the time you come back.

Make sure you go to an actual Globe Store. It will be anyone's guess if one of the gazillions of Pasaload sari sari places would know how to use an iPhone.
