In May, Malta voted "Yes" in a referendum to legalize divorce in their staunchly Catholic country. That leaves the Philippines as the only country, apart from the Vatican City State, that does not allow divorce.

Gabriela Rep. Liza Maza first filed a divorce bill in Congress in 2005. The bill was re-filed in August 2010 by Gabriela Women's party-list. Committee deliberations began on June 1, 2011.

To help readers understand the provisions of House Bill 1799, or An Act Introducing Divorce in the Philippines, GMA News Online publishes the full text of the Divorce Bill filed by Gabriela Women's party-list.
