The driver of the bin lorry that crashed in Glasgow killing six people has been banned from driving for three years.

Harry Clarke was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and will be tagged for four months.

At an earlier hearing Clarke, 60, admitted culpable and reckless driving nine months after the fatal crash.

He had his licence withdrawn for medical reasons following the bin lorry crash on 22 December 2014.

If I was one of the family who were killed by this chap then I would be feeling very peeved to say the least, he should have been prosecuted for the initial crash as he had passed out at the wheel previously to this incident and was aware that he should not have been driving.

    Something isn't right.

He should be in prison and let out when one of those he killed opens the door for him, should never drive again tagged for life all benifits stopped, regardless of hardships.

It just beggars belief that he was not locked up for this, firstly for avoiding prosecution for what I see as murdering six people and secondly for being found driving whist banned for blatantly obvious reasons.

For me if you are driving knowing full well there is a possibility you could pass out at the wheel then you deserve locking up at the very least, responsible people wouldn't even think for one moment of doing such a reckless act.

Begs the question, who is also going to be locked up for employing him without proper (and ongoing) medical and other checks ?

Its incumbent on the individual to be honest (see this report https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/dec/07/glasgow-bin-lorry-crash-inquiry-harry-clarke-driver) and I agree that more stringent checks have to be put in place and anyone who flouts or deceives the rules should be held to account. For instance if a driver is required to take a medical there are doctors who tout themselves for this service (I think this is a major loophole currently) and rely on the honesty of the person applying or perhaps the more unscrupulous care not in the a medical exam

I've had some very thorough medical exams in the past, because I was operating heavy plant on construction sites and in tunnels (as part of the induction process).
I would be amazed if drivers of such heavy vehicles, which obviously have to move in tight spaces and heavily populated areas, were not thoroughly checked.

I have my LGV class one and have been using it for years I go to my own doctor for my medical check not these who tout for cheap business once Ive passed my medical the form goes with the licence application for the renewal of the licence the doctor is fully aware of my medical history. With those who tout for business they often do not see the full medical history of the applicant and depend on honesty of medical history in this case the guy chose to be dishonest. As I say I believe the loophole is being tightened.
In this case he has been dishonest in disclosure or and reporting medical information he blacks-out at the wheel of a coach, he fails to report this to medical experts to continue with his licence he blacks-out at the wheel of the bin lorry and kills 6 innocents he then drives while disqualified and also with the full knowledge he may black-out again.
He cares not one jot about anyone but himself and should of been sent to prison and the families of those he killed should of been allowed to bring a private prosecution to haunt him for the rest of his miserable sad life. Now mine and your taxes have to go and support him brilliant!
