Just had my renewal quote for Car Insurance can't believe the hike that they are proposing, inflation running at 10% so how can they justify a hike from £390 to £553, I guess its time to shop around.

I paid £255 last year but my car died in January, I bought a replacement in February the extra for the cost of the change for the new details was only about £35 however renewal is this month and Hastings Direct are quoting me £507 for the coming year they produced a comparison that said if I had used the same details as my new car last year then last year would have been £377 so effectively my renewal this year cost £130 extra.

I did the rounds on the price comparison sites and the best rate I could get was about £380 but I'm not going with that quote because it does not look like a good insurer, you want an insurer that will acutally pay out if the worst happens, I tried a couple of direct quotes from insurers that I would trust like LV but they came in at over £620 so I've kind of settled on just taking the hit and staying with Hastings Direct, that's with 7 years no claims by the way, my no claims history restarted back in 2016 because my old car was SORN'd for 3 years prior to that.

The change in the rules that mean that insurers now have to offer the same price to new customers as well as existing customers is probably the main reason this hike has happened this year.

I paid 650 pesos for 3rd party but it's useless, had a miner accident my Fault. I said to the driver I give you 3 k to repair, only needed buffing he insisted calling the police. I got a police escort to the cop shop 5 hours later I had to get a lawyer to get my car and his back. I gave him my phone number and FB contact. He went to the Toyota dealers where he bought his car told them the panel was dented. but they told him it just wants buffering out.
Cost. 1,650 pesos and half a day wasted.
What a carry on. it weren't even a scratch. Even the police said it's very minimal.

Iv already done that Malcolm I dont know if it made any difference, talking about rising prices I have been looking around at Car prices I have always been one for having a car that will get me from A to B day in day out ie maximum Iv ever paid is my present Citroen C1 about 1200 quid back in 2018, the prices of Cars now are absolutely crazy, now £1200 might by an old banger with 150k on the clock my current little C1 has 90k on the clock but is using lots of oil so thats a clue that its on the way out, another example at a Car sales site 2 weeks ago an old N reg civic £1999, looks like my budget of £1500 is going to have to double :( mind i suppose I could always get a bicycle https://www.wiggle.com/c/cycle/bikes/road-bikes looking at those prices I think I will stick to 4 wheels :D.

I have been paying Lloyds Bank Car Insurance.
It may not be the cheapest but they paid for my car to be repaired when a tree fell on it in February 2022 and I had the use of a courtesy car throughout the process also.
The cost would have been £ thousands and they repaired the car when I needed it most. The difference of up to £100 between different insurance companies pales into insignificance when an expensive accident happens.

This Honda Accord cost me £400 in 2016 my prior Accord was the American built Coupe from 2001 and cost me about £16,000, this £400 car lasted 7 years and would have lasted longer were it not for the fact that you can't buy the fuel lines anywhere anymore they are high pressure steel lines and have to be correctly formed and bent so when they were found to be leaking on Jan 3rd that was it, dead, my mechanic was really sad he said it's got years left but he just couldn't find the parts anywhere and neither could I, Honda discontinued the parts, it was a 22 year old car.

I really really didn't want to replace my Accord this year I wanted to replace it 2 years from now but I should have replaced it last year, I got this one which is the car I've wanted for a long time, this car is worth about £3000 in the old second hand market it's only done 40,000 miles and it looks and feels absolutely great but I had to pay 8 grand to get it, so it better last me at least 8 years.

The second hand car market is getting nearly as bad as it is in the Philippines where if it moves it doesn't matter how old it is or how worn out it is, they think it's worth at least 50% of the price of a new car.

    Yeah it's insane.

Immediately before it died my 400 quid Accord was worth anything up to £1800, the same car same age same mileage was selling for that price on average on eBay and Auto Trader, madness.

It strikes me that new cars are cheaper than here in the UK though Jim, but only if you have the money to pay for them outright with no credit of any kind.

Totally agree on second hand prices, they are just ridiculous in the Philippines but they're becoming ridiculous here in the UK as well.

It's going to be more and more of a problem here as the years go by too, people will feel forced towards buying electric vehicles but that makes little sense for someone in their mid 60s that does not do a lot of miles, the market for second hand cars will become more and more an older person's market as our carbon impact is less and keeping an old car running is less carbon intensive in the current environment than builing new electric vehicles from scratch, the carbon cost of the manufacture of old second hand vehicle is already sunk, low annual miles while keeping an old car alive is more efficient than building and buying a new electric vehicle but it's going to become harder and harder to keep old cars on the roads because of shortage of parts, also as electric vehicles gradually displace fossil fuels petrol will become more and more expensive, I think a shrinking second hand market is with us for the foreseeable future with it being mostly comprised of older people and I suspect that will result in higher second hand prices for any cars that are in good condition those in less good condition will end up scrapped as no one will want them.

    Morris Garages...
    I had a midget then a BGT.
The midget felt like it was going 200mph because it was so low to the ground and it was fun when I was a single man in my twenties.
The BGT felt slow and ponderous in comparison.

Having kids changes everything. I never speed now.

I had it nearly 8 years--the longest ive ever owned a car.
I had searched ebay all over the south of england on ebay for a year for that exact colour and spec.--only to find it standing unused less than 2 miles from where i was living.
I had spent a fair bit on it--mainly upgrades rather than just repairs. But its had hardly any use this last few years.
The tin worm was winning--and i'm in no fit state to limbo underneath to tackle it. I couldnt bear to see it slowly rot away in the driveway--so it was either spend a lot on unseen corrosion--or let it go.
The buyer is a young man--an enthusiast--who was dead keen to get it--bringing his dad to vet it yesterday evening. His insurance is costing more than he paid for the car!

You may miss the MG at times, Malcolm but you live in an area where there are lots of buses :like:

That's the right way to deal with that situation Malcolm, you've handed your car to a new generation that will care about it, sad for you but all good things and times come to an end, I still to this day miss my S2000 broke my heart when I had to sell that car and I was a lot younger then only 49 years old.

and i use them ! Back when i was living alone in a rented flat i would go catch a bus and leave the car back home. I traveled on all the bus routes --upstairs--and saw places and sights i had never seen before. My senior bus pass got a lot of use.

I had my car written off in March due to a head-on bump :[ I also was with Lloyds Car Insurance and they have been great for the most part. Was paid out fairly swiftly, had courtesy car provided and had frequent email communication with them.
