    What is a battery?

A very large amount of energy contained in a very small chemical device.

    What is a bomb?

A very large amount of energy contained in a very small generally chemical device if you discount nuclear.

    What is a fuel tank?

A very large amount of energy contained in a relatively small space.

They are all means of storing energy the only difference is the rate of conversion of energy to useful work.

The volume occupied by Lithium Ion batteries is probably substantially larger than the average petrol fuel tank but they contain similar total amounts of energy when a tank is full or a battery array is fully charged.

Lithium Ion batteries are very safe but they are succeptable to physical damage and manufacturing faults, some battery technologies are better than others the reason Lithium Ion is currently in use is because it offers the highest energy densities of any current storage technology in a relatively safe package however they aren't sustainable due to the long term material requirements they pose, there's a lot of lithium in the world but most of it is in sea water and is not easily accessible.

I've said it before Hydrogen Fuel cells (an electricity generator) are a better long term solution, rapid refueling, decent range and it's relatively safe and it is zero carbon if the hydrogen is generated using hydrolysis via renewable energy, it's not zero carbon if it uses reformed methane.

I also learned about Nickel Hydrogen batteries yesterday a great way to use ubiquitous materials technology to store off peak renewables generation for peak electricity requirements, this is not Nickel Metal Hydride it's something different, these have been in use for over 50 years in satellites but should have far greater applications on earth, just like fuel cells have been in use since the 60s in the space programme. Nickel–hydrogen battery - Wikipedia

All technology is flawed Mike, I've seen cars on fire at the side of the road more times than I want to remember and not cars in accidents just parked up on the motorway after the owners evacuated as the fire started.

    P.S.

The reason you will never see Star Trek hand held Phasers that can vaporise objects or people or drill large holes in them is that you will never get the required energy density in a hand held device.

Bullets are far simpler as they transfer the potential chemical energy of the explosive to kinetic energy of the bullet which experiences relatively small energy losses before converting the kinetic energy back to excess potential energy in the target, a bullet can be thought of as a remote explosion.

Kinetic energy weapons work the only advantage light has is instant targeting you can't dodge light but kinetic energy weapons will always be simpler which is the reason behind the hypersonic missile weapon push just now, shorten the time you have to dodge the missile (or bullet).

A few days ago, in southern Italy (Bari) a man was found carbonised inside the burnt wreck of his small electric car....

Sorry cannot find the version in English..

I read somewhere that the ratio of electric powered vehicles self combusting compared to traditional fuel ones is far too high,
There will be more deaths before the various glitches are ironed out...

Not that I would buy one anyway.....
I love the reassuring sound of a perfectly tuned diesel engine...

Not heard of them Jim, but you don't need the very highest energy densities for a storage system so I would guess these would be good.
