If you qualify, you can get Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus (includes Outlook 2010) from at least three educational suppliers for around £70. I use Software4students... http://www.software4students.co.uk/
Another way to avoid Google; a search engine that doesn't track you at all.... it's called DuckDuckGo, I've been using it for 2 weeks now, it uses SSL encryption for starters, and there's no sponsored links rubbish like Google. Now if I could just get my Android device to not use Google, that would be the icing on the cake.
STARTPAGE allows you to use the Google search engine, but without the privacy concerns... https://startpage.com/
Startpage is starting a new e-mail service that they claim will be the world's most secure e-mail service. It will be subscription-only with no adverts. If it is as good as Startpage and around £5/month I think it could be worthy consideration. You can sign up for your interest (no obligation) here... https://beta.startmail.com
Thanks for that Howerd. Looks very interesting. To update the rest of the thread, Fastmail have been divorced from Opera Software and are now independent again. They have promised Calendaring (CalDAV) and Contacts (CarDAV) will be available very soon, and they seem serious about it this time round so I can finally have everything in one place.
I see that Fastmail uses the Yubikey as a second factor authentication device. Much more convenient to have such a device on your phone, such as Google Authenticator. And Yubikeys cost money, whereas Google Authenticator can be downloaded for free from Google Play.
I Don't know if you are aware but Fastmail uses Google Authenticator as well. I agree about Yubikey; its too expensive, much better an app on the phone. The beauty of Fastmail is that should you ever lose your Yubikey or Google authenticator, you can still log in using your main account password. Fastmail have announced on EMD that Calendar is almost ready, it will be in closed beta next week, then hoping for general release before Christmas. At last. Once both CarDAV and CalDAV are live, I'm gonna shut down the Google account.
Calendar and CalDAV are now live. It's still in beta, but looking and acting very stable for me. Managed to sync on my Razr-i & Tablet using a CalDav app and Thunderbird Lightning supports CalDav anyway. So, it's all working nicely. Fastmail have stated they will release CardDAV soon, so that'll be contacts sorted. In a meantime, I'm using my Hotmail account for syncing contacts. The main thing is my personal Google apps account is history, no need for it anymore.
