How long does the results of the English Test last for? For instance if someone takes the English test in April 2017 but doesn't need it until 2018/19 will it still be valid?

Nice try but no cigar! IELTS actually stands for International English Language Test System.

I would suggest that the English test is taken closer to the application date. The reason for that is the requirements may change. The English test requirements changed recently, and there is no guarantee that they will not change further. You do not want to have to re-take a test because it is no longer accepted...

Surely if you comply with the rules at the time of booking they can't be changed retrospectively?

Agreed. However the poster implied he didn't 'need it' until 2018/2019. Since it's not possible to lodge an application for more than 3 months in advance, that implies that the application is not going to be filed for a considerable time, during which time, the rules may change.
