I read that, and I find it worrying. But then again, I believe, that the Phil Government has been aware for quite a while and sat on their ar$e$. They could have organised better courses and real qualifications for the seafarers in plenty of time.
Been shaping up for years, some other country a bit more on the ball will be waiting in the wings to fill the void most probably.
My wife's brother is a sailor, not sure what rank he is but he is an officer on the ships bridge. Not heard of any news from him, he sails all over the globe.
It may... but often if a significant country or group of countries decides they aren't up to it the Insurers follow... and then the shipping industry has no choice but to follow their lead... May be doing the Phils a favour because once the robots come many of those jobs will be gone anyway.
Most of the jobs that Filipino personnel do cannot be done by robots, John. Chipping/painting, AB Seamen, chefs, waiters, engine room work and being on the bridge is pretty much hands-on with communication skills being required.
I don't think any of us have any idea how much the world will change when the robots start taking over...
My sons cousin is a genius level kid, accelerated learning program with similar kids, I think she did a lecture for Google at their HQ on AI, she is currently doing a degree on nanotechnology or something along those lines in Canada, its closer than we think.
