Anyone think that England can win?

I think they can. But there is some luck involved. Home advantage may help with that.

I was a believer before the last World Cup and explained why on a post on here. And look how well they did. Once Gareth gets his waist coat on and gets going I think England will do well.

    There's an optimist :D
I'm generally optimistic but never with the English football team.
I remember the 1966 World Cup final win but that last English win was 54 years ago

We all remember the Euro 96 song "30 years of hurt." I was 16 when that tournament took place, and the 1966 World Cup win was a different era entirely.

Now, in 2021, the first World Cup I remember was Italia 90 which was 31 years ago. To me, those memories from the Panini sticker album, Pavarotti, Roger Milla, Toto Schillaci, Gascoigne, Pearce/Waddle penalties, Frank Rijkaard spitting in Rudi Voller's wonderful mullet (the final itself probably the least memorable part of the tournament), those memories are still fresh in the mind. It seems like just a few years ago. Yet today, the kids will look back at highlights of Italia 90 in the same way I viewed England 66. Makes me feel very old.

I had tickets for all of the games at Euro 96 at Old Trafford. So I didn’t see England play live. There had been a chance if the draw fell right they might have played there at some point but they didn’t. I ended up seeing Germany a lot!

They will double the "hurt" soon.
England have never won a tournament overseas, pathetic really.
Don't get me wrong, I will watch the games with anticipation but we have no chance. There has been so many excellent overseas players in Division One then the Premier League which has stopped the national side from progressing.

If the right players tick, England will win it give it to the kids " you never win anything with kids"

I wish they would do this.
Didn't Germany do this not so long ago?

And that only because England was the host nation and didn't need to qualify for the tournament like the others.............

    I remember it too.........

I did type similar in post #8, Dom:
"England have never won a tournament overseas, pathetic really."

I am only mentioning this because us English football team supporters are painfully aware of our terrible track record o_O

I often wonder why teams like Italy, Spain and Germany can keep their calmness when the going gets tough instead of us English who bottle it when calm heads are really required.

I don't think it depends on team effort.........
I think It is one individual or two messing things up, for that crucial moment, that dictates the dire results

like Southgate, Beckham, and others missing vital chances

He is going to field 3 centrebacks and two wing backs judging by the final squad he has picked.

Didn’t they do well! There was some nice play from England. But was it down to Croatia being a spent force these days?

The tournament is developing rather well. Highly contested games with good footballing and determination to win.
    So far so good.
At the moment, for me, The Netherlands and Italy look good for it.
But let's see what Germany does, although in a group including Spain, France and Hungary, doesn't seem to bode too well..
