If you are a user of Facebook, and chances are that if you are reading this.. You are. Make sure you understand and implement some of the features of Facebook's privacy settings before you start leaving yourself open to everyone out there.

I joined Facebook in 2007 when it was still a fledgling social media site, but growing quickly. There were limited settings for security and for the most part when you wrote something on a friends wall, all of your friends as well as their friends could see it. Not any more!! Now, there are multiple options when it comes to Facebook privacy that it is possible to say something about X to Y, without X finding out about it (unless Y tells them), but you get the idea.. You can keep limited information open to the public and sometimes limited information available to friends.

So, how do you sort out these settings?

Here is a great video of how to update your privacy settings

Just as important as settings are creating lists to group friends into. This is not really to restrict posts (though it does do that), but to manage what gets posted is read by the people it is meant for. So that when I post messages meant for my close family, I can ensure that only they see that. A good example is if you invite friends round to your house for a party, you really need to keep that to a small group and not all of your Facebook friends - or worse, the entire local area....

But to actively engage in social media like Facebook, it is pretty important that you understand the security that is involved with those services. There is no need for a potential employer to read in your public Facebook profile about our drunken shenanigans last weekend or worse.

Good post, the new privacy settings are really fantastic and easy to apply for everyone too.
Which is why i did not bother to post my facebook email ID's here on that forum in another thread.
Even the (posted) email adresses are only for the fb accounts, i use others for "regular" email communication.
In fact i use only one singular email adress for every IT activity.

Take this as a tip guys, if you want to use facebooks, forums or other, use separate emails for each, just in case.

Also reduces your SPAM. And if you decided to leave whichever activity, one can simply delete the email account with it.

And while we are at IT tips- I also made it a habbit to use a separate email adress for browsing. This way my real email never leaves any cookies or traces, except for communication.

Its a bit discomfort in the beginning to change browser if one wants to quickly "google" something, but it reduces Spam to zero in your important email adresses.

Only trouble i have are the nth different passwords for each email adress,...sigh

That would'nt be hard in my case, i have exactly - 2.5 pairs of socks - :D . I still hope i find the missing one so i can upgrade to 3 pair.

But to be honest, i always am an open book, i got 3 facebook too. (with the associated emails each) The third account is a testing and gambling one.
Testing- so far i have not found any usefull ( external ) facebook application which is useful at all, but i found several which "collect" data only.
Gambling- i admit that i had a phase of "Mafia Wars" games and the likes, but that is over now.Highly addictive stuff,i can only warn, its fun and ties you endless hours to your PC. I cured it then by posting in an internet forum (9000 posts in one year, lol) but then i stopped there too.

Actually thats a good topic, PC addiction, i'll put that up now.
