The last 3 paragraphs say it all, the net result will be that it will probably wreck the budget airlines and once wrecked the long haul premium airlines will be able to increase prices substantially through lack of competition. I'm all for some kind of compensation but the airlines are struggling badly already and backdating claims by 6 years is not exactly going to help any of them.
I have three very nice Montblanc pens purchased onboard with Lufthansa compensation vouchers for a bumped flight many years ago. Too expensive to use, I leave them in their boxes and use cheapo ballpoints.
