    Welcome to the forum Addy.

You can submit your application 10 days before the expiry date no problem.

    Regarding forms of payment, see below;

    How can you pay?
You must pay by one of the methods specified below.
    • Cheque (postal applications only)
    • Postal Order (postal applications only)
    • Credit card - Visa (including Electron), MasterCard or American Express (Amex)
    • Debit card - Delta, Maestro* (including Solo)
    • Banker’s draft (payable to the Home Office) (postal applications only)
    * Maestro - we will only accept Maestro cards issued in the UK .
    Cheques and postal orders
You must make the cheque or postal order payable to Home Office Leave to Remain and cross the cheque or postal order(s) A/C Payee only.
Write the full name, nationality and date of birth of the main applicant on the back of each cheque and/or each postal order and keep the postal order stub(s). Make sure that the date and the amount (words and figures) are correct and that the cheque is signed properly.
If applying by post or courier, attach your cheque or postal order(s) to the front of the application form.

All the details can be found in the FLR(M) form attached.

Yes, you can actually apply 28 days before the expiration of the old visa, 10 days is no problem.

I chose to pay by cheque.

I was going to pay by card, but when I paid the NHS surcharge it was declined as a security risk so I had to call the bank to confirm it was me.

So I thought that might happen again with the flr so wrote a cheque instead.

The date of application can be at any time before the current visa expiry date and still maintain the current immigration status.
Do be aware that the date of application varies according to the submission method used:-

    - By regular Royal Mail post it's the date of posting as indicated on the envelope
    - By Premium Service it's the date on which it is accepted by a Home Office premium service centre.
    - By courier or other postal services provider, it's the date on which it is received by the Home Office

Might sound obvious but you don't need to include a copy of the application form. Saves posting extra 74 pages

I'd keep a copy of the application forms for your own records though.

    Don't forget there's a new FLR(M) application form issued November 2015
