TalkTalk has just introduced apps for both Android and iPhones enabling your mobile phone to make free calls over WiFi or data connection back to the UK from anywhere in the world. You can get the free calls any-time your TalkTalk plan allows free calls - that may be weekends/evening or 24/7 depending on your land-line call package. Any chargeable calls are billed to your land-line phone at TalkTalk's prevailing rates. It is not possible to download the app in the Philippines but can you 'push' the app to the phone from another device. You also need to be able to register the app using a UK mobile number. You can also set up a 'Follow Me' function so that any calls made to your TalkTalk land-line also ring simultaneously within the app on the mobile handset. This is great when travelling abroad, especially as you set up the 'Follow Me' function from your TalkTalk on-line account, rather than typing codes into your land-line phone. The app has a few quirks to sort out but calls are of excellent quality (using about 3.5MB/3 minutes) so watch any data charges over a mobile connection! I will certainly be using the app to make and receive calls between the Philippines and the UK during a month-long trip to the Philippines this Xmas. I think BT and even Virgin have similar apps but I am not sure if their offering also provide incoming calls. TalkTalk's T&C's seem to suggest that incoming calls answered by the mobile app are charged at UK local rates, but I am being charged nowt for incoming calls answered on my mobile app - that may because I have a 24/7 unlimited package.
