You don't sound like a young intrepid explorer so it might help if you indicated why you are going there:

    Find a girlfriend?
    Find a boyfriend?
    Diving?
    Travel Holiday?
    Other???

    My own order :D

It may not be a popular view, but if you're going to Asia for the first time (and a lady is not on the agenda), I'd rank several countries ahead of the Philippines for general tourism purposes.

Thailand is the #1 in SE Asia for good reason. Abundance of culture, pristine beaches, good infrastructure.

Vietnam just behind Thailand for similar reasons.

Cambodia is great, but less beaches. Many people combine Cambodia with a visit to another country.

Indonesia is a bit rugged outside of Bali.

Don't get me wrong, I do love the Philippines. You'd have a great time around Bohol, Cebu, Boracay (if the President doesn't close it down). Manila, in my view, I would not inflict on my worst enemy. It is visited solely for the airport.

However, if this is your first time to Asia and you are not greatly experienced overseas, I'd tick other countries off the bucket list first. Unless you are telling fibs and there is a woman in the background in which case, go for it.

Welcome to the forum , you can find plenty of tips on the basics on here .
Before you decide where to go, decide what sort of holiday you want you have , and what you want to do , ie, sight seeing , nightlife , beaches , city , activity ?

If you are going to travel with a friend , just make sure you both have similar interests ,and want the same things from your holiday .

There are many Asian countries you can visit , and the Philippines isn't usually the first choice for most people , but it certainly is different in many ways to Thailand and other more popular tourist destinations .

Oh by the way , I forgot to add ,
You might not be going there to find a girlfriend , but don't be surprised if you do . You have been warned haha .

I do agree with this. Especially Thailand but also Vietnam are much better choices for a first-timer to Asia than the Philippines, especially for somebody as young as this. As a tourist 'product', the Philippines just isn't very good. The infrastructure is poor. The tourist industry is, frankly, backward. The geography is a nuisance. The food and the service is iffy, and it is also comparitively rather expensive and poor value for money, for what you get. For somebody that is only 22, there are also very few other tourists around of that age. In Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam etc there is many thousands of youngsters everywhere. In the Philippines, although there are more now than there used to be, especially in what passes for its 'backpacker trail' of Dumaguete-Siqujor-Bohol, which attracts a bit of a younger crowd, there is still hardly any by comparison.

You don’t have to be scared, a lot of solo traveller enjoy the Philippines even if it’s their first Asian trip. You seemed like an experienced traveller anyway. We are travelling to Philippines 2nd week of April and will be exploring El Nido (beach) and Sagada (mountains). Let me know what you want to do and I can suggest where it would be ideal for you to go.
