Hello there Tom, a very warm welcome here.
I am on a journey of "preparation" to eventually relocate to Philippines. Well, actually we should already be there, but life is full of it's own plans.

I look forward to gaining whatever I can from your experience. :like:

    Thankyou for joining with us.

    Hi Bigtombowski and :welcome:

We have a little 8½ months old daughter and we have a keyboard waiting for her :like:

I bought it for my wife but she didn't find it easy to learn and gave up quite quickly, but she was pregnant and had more important things to do at the time.

Do you think it is essential for someone starting off to go to a teacher?

Thanks for the welcomes WalesRob and Aromulus.

Micawebwer - feel free to pick my brains anytime about this whole living in the Philippines lark :)

Aposhark! ... You're starting your daughter early. That's a great thing.

I took to the keyboard when I was about 2 or 3 years old, already playing things which could be described as tuneful. Before my age reached double digits, I was playing things like Bohemian Rhapsody! This was all before I went to lessons. I found that the lessons gave me the finesse that I had lacked from years of playing by ear as a self taught musician, but if it's ok to add a video here, I will show you what level my playing reached before I got lessons ...

That's purposely generic ... but then ... after I went to lessons I got new ideas of what I could do ...

so hopefully that answers your question ...

to sum it up ... Yes, it's possible to learn well without lessons! :)
