I remember a market stall in Bangkok trying to get me to buy a taser off of them, my jovial cries of "I'll get arrested trying to get that through the airport" were brushed aside..

Couldn't buy it though, I'd get caught without a doubt.

Yea I was thinking the same. A foreigner using a taser on a Filipino, I think you'd be in a world of pain.

Well with me working away and obviously most of the neighbours know of me I just feel we're at risk more than the average Filipino family. A german guy got burguled the other month. Granted it was an inside job (the maid let them in) but I will feel better knowing the wife had some means of protecting herself while I'm away. More importantly a means of protecting herself which means she doesn't have to get too close to the "perp" doing the robbing.

A round metal bar about 18-24" long, 12-15mm diameter will also be handy.

    Hammer o_O :)

Seriously though, the problem with a lot of weapons is that they can be turned against the defender as well, at least a Taser would have half a chance of getting your average Filipino as not that many people wear thick leather clothing or anything remotely armored.

Problem with a Taser is that it is a single use weapon so only really effective against a lone attacker. They might be re-loadable but that would take valuable time and you usually have to keep the voltage applied to keep the assailant down.

You sound as if you have used a Taser, Oss. :D

Nah, never touched one in my life :D

But when you think about it they are not so far from a high powered photographers flashgun with the casing removed, in other words a big high capacity capacitor and battery and with a delivery mechanism added.

I used to think up things like this on my way to school in the morning, all inspired by watching Star Trek.

One idea I had was an annular laser beam to ionise a channel of air down which I could then release an electric charge a bit like a taser down the middle, the annular laser was probably the wrong idea as all I would really have needed was to ionise a channel but that was what I came up with in 1970, the closest I could get to a real Star Trek Phaser :) As ever I knew that I simply could not squeeze a power source small enough into a hand held weapon, however you could power something like that today with a big backpack of Lithium Ion batteries or even some kind of fancy fuel cell.

Anyway turns out that something along those line has been worked on in the last ten years :D

In my mind its this or a gun and I'm not having one of those in house (even though I like guns in most forms and used to do a bit of target pistol shooting) with my wifes mood swings. Plus she's quite clumsy so would probably end up shooting the dog or worse me! Good point about the taser being a one shot deal though I think some of them you can change the charges much like reloading a pistol. One of those with a torch on it would scare most would be intruders dressed in a vest and flip flops.

Hammer's not a bad idea either. Used to know a bloke who kept the butt of a pool cue down the side of his car seat in case of "bother". Used to great affect a few times.

Most of the Filipino households I'd visited had dogs (which would go nuts around me because I was a stranger to them). Some CS spray might be the answer, none lethal but easily resprayed against multiple perpetrators if needed. So at least if any kids accidentally spray themselves we're only talking a screaming child and at worst a visit to the docs to check things over.

Most Filipinos are scared of dogs and won't attempt to enter a house or its lot if they see a dog or hear one barking. And the dog doesn't need to be particularly fierce to be effective - our "guard dog" is a Cocker Spaniel and a rather diminutive one at that!

I personally would not advise a foreigner having anything in the way of being an offensive weapon in the house simply because I wouldn't trust the police not to prosecute them rather than the criminal who invades their property.

Every house round us has multiple dogs that bark at the slightest thing. Trouble is the owners seem to tune it out, which winds me up because they just keep on barking. I've already complained to 2 neighbours about it and they seem to do something about it now. The tuning out of dogs barking starts to render them useless, most dogs here only bark and are generally scared if you approach them.

If we do get anything for home protection it'll all be done in the wifes name, same principle as if you have a gun. We cant but there is nothing stopping the wife having one registered in her name and on the property. Just remember to wipe the prints off it after use!!!

Not sure if tasers are legal but it might be of good help. Something useful would be a pepper spray and an arnis stick.

Also, try to secure your home by installing automatic locks on the doors.

In the UK tasers, CS gas, pepper spray etc are illegal. The best you can do is carry a personal alarm and one of these...

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mini-Defence-Spray-Criminal-Identifier/dp/B006K3GNAC

Penknives (without lockable blades) under 3" long are also OK to carry and maybe a 'tactical pen'...

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=tactical pen&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=38885495874&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=s&hvrand=1219224921997357428&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_5y2okbk3bf_e

But in your home you could have long fixed blade knives, baseball bats etc but you still cannot use tasers, CS gas or pepper spray.

Don't know what the law says in the Philippines.
