What is happening in Hong Kong?! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-48821640 "Protesters have forced their way into the central chamber of Hong Kong's parliament after an hours-long siege. Inside the central legislative chamber, one protester sprayed black paint across the emblem of Hong Kong on the rear wall - while another raised the old British colonial flag, which features the union jack." It seems China cannot be trusted, and they are testing the patience of the people of Hong Kong. Normally, HK is a civilised place, the people law abiding, and peaceful, but recent protests have shown they do not like being pushed too far. I hope this is a warning for other nations of the world that people power has the potential to really shake the foundations of the ruling elite who think they can get away with playing silly buggers with people's rights. As for raising the old colonial flag, I had to chuckle about that. It shows we must have done something right. I was reading online about 6 years ago about a recent visit to Hong Kong by Chris Patten. He'd been invited to speak at the HK University, and he was very popular - some participants said afterwards they wished he was still in charge! I've read a couple of books by Chris Patten, he's a well educated, very clever man. I love Hong Kong, there is nowhere like it in the world, a unique blend of east and west. I fear China are meddling and are slowly hacking away at the freedoms enjoyed by HK residents under the one-country, two systems.
There was to be no change to the way of life for 50 years after we left, that seems like wishful thinking, but however much the HK Chinese don't like it they are still Chinese,i loved the place, lived there for years and enjoyed every single moment, totally unique cityn but we were guests, its part of china.
Of course. Socialism and Communism is impatient. It is not only knocking at the gates,it`s about ready to initiate it`s plan to smash the capitalist model down. The people of HK can see this and will demonstrate for their freedom at least for as long as they have it.
I love the place too (and also used to live and work there). Me, the Mrs, and our son were there last week. Sadly, a bit rainy for good scenic pics. .
I would love to see Hong Kong one day, but I hope when I do that it is still the kind of place you remember, I fear that China could completely crush the rights of the people of Hong Kong it is a vastly uneven fight.
Taiwan has the luxury of a defence agreement with the USA to keep the mainland at arms length. If Beijing was concerned by insurrection and was forced to impose direct rule from the mainland, I don't know if anyone could stop them.
