My flight to PI got cancelled in 2010 because of this Iceland eruption triggers red alert http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-28977773
Geologically, Iceland is almost the flipside of the Philippines. Whilst the Philippines is seismically active owing to subduction, Iceland is one of few places along the Mid Atlantic Ridge where sea floor spreading occurs above sea level.
I got stuck in Madrid for a week which was most enjoyable last time the Iceland volcano flared up. At the hotel I was staying at there were many distraught families who couldn't make it home and I really felt for them, it was absolutely ridiculous how the train, hotel, ferry and car hire prices shot up putting them out of reach of your average family. There was one computer in reception and people were queuing up for ages to use it. I think there should be laws in place for when this sort of thing happens preventing heartless companies from making a fast buck on the back of misery.
Timmers at the time both the airline and MAN airport car parking had absolutely no problems rescheduling both flight and parking. However since the last eruption you will notice that insurance policies have now added a section (which you pay extra for) which covers you for things like volcanic explosions. How is that when the first time there was no issue? Money making exercise me thinks
I thought they might change the goal posts as the airlines took a big hit. I had no problem claiming off easy jet first time around, just sent them a generic expense sheet and receipts. I do remember though that it took a hell of a lot of digging to actually contact easy jet via their site and to submit the expenses. Like you say, its a bit naughty what they are doing now regarding charging more for the travel insurance.
