"Is Swedish furniture giant Ikea coming to the Philippines?

Very likely, according to Christian Rojkjaer, managing director for Ikano Retail Asia, an Ikea franchisee in the region.

“I think we could open 3 stores here tomorrow. The market is very ready for it,” said Rojkjaer at the investment briefing for a Swedish delegation at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Wednesday, February 20.

“What I see is a population with families that like their homes. That’s what we’re selling,” he added.

Rojkjaer said Filipinos will get to enjoy the full range of Ikea products as soon as their application with the Swedish firm for franchising rights of the brand for the Philippine market is approved.

Ikano is waiting to hear back from Ikea so it could include the Philippines in its Asian portfolio.

Ikano is one of 12 Ikea franchisees worldwide. In Southeast Asia, they were already granted franchising rights for Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand markets."

That will be nice, ought to be better quality than some of the cheap local junk I've bought over there in Abenson's or SM, really SM furniture is terrible.

I don't mind buying Ikea stuff, I have a lovely quality coffee table in front of me right now that I have had for 13 years still in great condition and I was fond of their bookcases as well.

You've obviously not heard of "Cymru Furnitures" which is in Mandaue City, Cebu, owned and operated by David Maynard who's originally from the Principality. He employs around 30 craftsmen most of whom he has trained and many have been employed since he started the business in 2004. He will make just about anything from a pair of solid oak Cathedral doors to reproduction antiques. He has also supplied all the furniture and bars for a number of well-known establishments including The Joker's Arms (Mandaue), Gustavian (Banilad), Gustavian (Ayala) and Tinder Box; he also exports to the UK and US. His draftsman can make a set of blueprints for any piece of furniture from a photo.I have a matching pair of reproduction Regency side tables including drawers with hinged "drop" handles that his company made and for which he charged me Php9,000. I would expect to pay at least double that amount in the UK.

We talked about that before Mark, I am well aware of the real craftsmen in the Phils and I know that they make quality furniture sometimes very cheaply, indeed at Christmas time we replaced our couch with a suite made from Bamboo, lovely quality superb workmanship and only 5000 peso for couch 2 chairs and a table, but bamboo is problematic as it attracts insects hence it can be cheap, we bought from a nearby family business in Bacoor.

I was specifically comparing some of the very cheap poor quality stuff from SM against the equivalent cheap stuff from Ikea that I've bought in the past, Ikea has a certain reliable predictable and perhaps now boring Ikea range but last time I was in SM at Christmas I would have rated everything as overpriced junk, I would want to see Ikea's prices in the Phils before I made any real assessment.

We've had only good experiences with IKEA furniture. The stuff we bought was pretty good quality and not the usual flat-pack grot that used to be sold at places like MFI (remember MFI?)
To be fair though, we avoided some of the cheaper IKEA lines.

Interestingly, when I think about it, here in Northampton we don't have much of a choice when it comes to funiture. Those we do have are very expensive. Ikea at Milton Keynes is always an interesting place to visit for that very reason. Always full of people.

Could be a good venture in the Philippines. I wonder if the Ikea style will appeal? A lot of the furniture shops in the Malls are pretty grim in terms of style and quality, but we've always been able to find lots of other outlets with good quality.

We're a little lucky in one way in that my wife's uncle has a furniture shop in Davao. Unlucky in another way in that we often feel obliged to buy from him when we not too keen on his stock.
I guess that could be the case anywhere though.

My ex wife and I used two Ikea two seater sofas in one of our lounges in Manchester, with fully washable covers. Very durable too. When we divorced we kept one each :D I wanted to buy a second when I was in Aberdeen but there was no Ikea store up there which is surprising as there's plenty of money in Aberdeen to warrant such a store - nearest store is in Edinburgh which is hundreds of miles away! Anyhow we always found Ikea to be okay, sure some of it wasn't appealing but a good deal of it was fine.

I believe there was a petition recently to get Ikea to Aberdeen. Seems funny that they might be opening in the Philippines.

Anybody tried the Ikea hot dogs though? Yuk...:D I think they used the same ingredients in their hotdogs as in their cheap end of the furniture range....

    Snap!!
We probably buy from the same place although definitely not bamboo as like you say, unseasoned and untreated, the bugs love it.
We bought at least 15 rattan sala sets from them over an an 8 year period.. Still all in same condition with absolutely no damage from Bok bok etc.. That said,we pay around 15k per set.
I wonder how well IKEA pine will fare in regards Filipino termites?
If it stand up well to them I can see a good business here.

Yeah that might be an issue, everybody was telling us that the bamboo would attract Surot, but I don't know exactly what they are supposed to be, maybe termites?

Our stuff was varnished but we did have black ant's up one leg of the couch but the internal partitioning in Bamboo means they were easy to get rid of.

The place we bought from was exactly on the left hand side of centre on this map http://goo.gl/maps/XaaOG

I thought Surot would probably turn out to be something else, I suspect people often erroneously name things, I got bitten badly while on a Jeepney, my left arm resting on the seat top just at the window just resting around my daughter's shoulder, people later said it must be Surot and then this new word seemed to get used for what seemed like possibly lots of things, so many words end up as stand-ins, 'Ano' :D

Would be good to know exactly where the Rattan furniture place is?

There are rattan shops both sides of the road near SM (walking distance)..
From SM going in the direction of Imus.. You cant really miss them..
The one we use actually make the furniture at the back of the shopfront..
Always haggle hard to get best price.

Regarding Surot or what ever u call it they should put chemicals to eradicates this problem before they sell it.

Yup.... used engine oil mixed with a little diesel or petrol ... soak the cut ends, wipe off and allow to dry. Works a treat!
