Am I right in thinking that you will have a new BRP when applying for ILR? Basically just updating the one we had with our FLR?

You return your old brp and you receive a new one which is stamped 'indefinite leave to remain' yes.

It's worth mentioning that even this 'indefinite leave' brp has an expiry date on it (in a cynical money making exercise) of a couple of years meaning that you then need to pay to renew it if you haven't applied for a certificate of naturalisation by then.

The bit about it being a money making exercise cynical or not is incorrect.
It is envisaged by 2024 the BRP number will be incorporated with your NI number ( if you have not become a British Citizen) and card carrying will be dispensed with.

Yes and No. Not exactly. The brp were initially issued with an expiry in 2024 in response to eu legislation concerning encryption technology and the Home Office then continued thst practice bist Brexit citing their 'plan'. Whilst it is true that post Brexit there are discussions/plans about moving the UK to a digital service, that isn't finalised and there remains a charge for renewal - although I admit that I have also read rumors that there won't be one when it's finally digital.

There is also often a large gap between what government says, and what it does. For example the snappy new VAT tax thst was supposed to replace income tax, or the pledge that national insurance would not rise, or the billions available after Brexit....

Maybe this is just cynical me but after paying the best part of 30,000 pounds in visa fees I don't share your faith that the government has no interest in making a snappy buck out of the immigration process.

I edited my post to make it a bit fairer and our posts crossed. Do you believe that I would post a link without reading it?

My post has nothing to do with politics... Or Brexit. I dislike all governments equally. Indeed, I tend to vote Tory only because the alternative tends to be worse but I don't really respect any of them.

I voted for Brexit but now I regret it simply because I have changed my mind and think it was a dumb idea but I will live with it.
