    Hi everyone

my Filipina is travelling from Manila to UK on a fiance visa this month. What is the best way to buy the oneway ticket? Prices in Manila seem much higher than the UK...

    Thank you

I don't know the answer but would also be interested to learn it.

There may be taxes included in the tickets bought in the Philippines. I have an idea that the departure tax is included and the terminal fee may be included also

Actually air tickets are a bit cheaper here and it is cheaper to fly to London than from London. The Philippines requires that air tickets be purchased in this country for all journeys commencing in the Philippines.

I got away with this once, I bought two overlapping sets of tickets

Departure Glasgow - Manila purchased on KLM UK site depart from UK late September return to UK late December.

Return Manila - Glasgow purchased on KLM Philippines site depart from Philipines early October return early December.

This worked out much cheaper however both tickets were purchased from the UK while I was in the UK.

Also a forward journey throwaway ticket (not a return) is a journey commencing in the Philippines so how can we buy those when we are not in the country?

Avoid dates during or within a few days of the school holidays.

How long has that rule been in force?

Thank you to everyone for replies

It looks like the prices in the Philippines are fractionally cheaper - or at least PAL flight from Manila to London. The reason I asked the question about where to buy the ticket...we asked a travel agent in Manila for a quote...it was 50% higher than UK, and therefore 50% higher than simply using PAL's website to book (whether accessing from UK or Manila). I had PAL's webpage open in the UK, my fiance had the same page open in Manila...the price was about the same, just a few pounds cheaper in Manila. But a whole lot cheaper than a quote from a travel agent's in Manila (ie dropping in the shop in person)!

The tip about avoiding school holidays...very true! This is not a good time to be travelling

If you're thinking of paying with your credit card...I have heard that the airline people at Manila will want sight of that actual card at departure.

You may wish to look into that.

I think this is true everywhere. Airlines are required to sight the credit card used, on check in. There must be a "way round it" though, as, for example, a child travelling un-accompanied will not have her or his parent's credit card...

When I looked into it, I noticed that Philippine Airlines (one way) was a bit cheaper from Manila as you did. I was disappointed to see that Cathay was not competitive at all when I looked. I've used BA one way from Manila before and they weren't too bad. I joke with my wife about Philippines airlines - say that I haven't used them because I want to arrive on an aircraft that isn't guided in by a guy on a stepladder waving a broom. :)

You simply present the card at the UK side. They then flag it on the booking.

As a quondam employee of the Swire Group, I am massively biassed in favour of Cathay Pacific. But PAL are a fine airline, with a long history and a good safety record.

I've always flown Cathay for years and always found them very good. I was bit disappointed to notice that they weren't competitive on single fares though. I guess it messed up their scheduling..

I've personally never flown PAL but since they have that 30kg baggage allowance there is yet room for a first time, joking aside. I'll tell my wife this is how I'll travel :)

Whilst on the subject of buying plane tickets, make sure your names are spelt correctly and not abbreviated. Your plane ticket should reflect the exact name as shown in your passport.

A company in Belgium buys my tickets and they keep using the shortened version of my name Tim instead of Timothy, I was pulled up by check in staff a couple of weeks ago on my way back from Zimbabwe, the girl said "your ticket doesn't match your passport and we can refuse to board you," this was at the boarding gate, I had to wait until everyone had boarded before she got the nod from her superior, close call, I mean a check in girl in Africa probably doesn't know Tim is short for Timothy, Andy is short for Andrew and so on.

Generally the airlines offices are based in the airport so necessitates a journey to the airport of course so that they can visually confirm it. Thas what I did with the asawa's one way journey to the UK. I think I questioned a few airlines about it and Emirates were the most accommodating, hence why they got my business.

Don't think Yorkshire Airlines cater for long haul flights.
