Break into and reseal a locked zipped suitcase demonstration

I know there are a few simple devices available to minimise risks, (by means of preventing re-closure) but does anyone have personal experience of anything?

I was quite shocked and I'm thinking I need to get something.
Must say I hadn't given any thought to this before.

There's some crazy folks out there :erm:

    No :D

I have never had a thing stolen from my baggage in 35 years of travelling.

    Very very interesting Peter!

Good god the implications are enormous!

I use a Samsonite bag that does not have a zip and that video just convinced me that any second bag should have similar Samsonite construction.

My take on this is that if anyone wants to break into your bag they will. So I just use a simple padlock on a soft bag (holdall type) to deter the majority and I minimise the amount of more valuable items that are in my bag that goes into the hold. Laptops etc, documentation etc go in my large pilot bag that I carry on board my flight.

I adopted this approach eons ago.

And in all the years and flights my bag has been lost only twice and both occasions got the bag and contents back. On one of those occasions the airline gave me about $100 to by clothes with in the interim until my bag was found, which was enough to help me out in the USA some 15 years ago.

I am not worried about people breaking into my baggage and stealing items - I am terrified of people breaking into my baggage and hiding drugs, for removal later.

I am not bothered about somebody stealing clothes.
My camera equipment and computer with hard drives is another.

I transport all of these except the laptop (goes in backpack) in a lockable waterproof case - essential for movement around the Philippines :like: The 1510 is the correct size for airline carry on.
I bought the yellow one. Easier to see if it drops in the "oggin".

I only had one bag broken into in 22 years of constant travelling and that was in the USA also (NY). I was refunded $100 also and got the bag back a few days later with items missing.

I've always fancied the 1510 Mike would love to have one but was not sure about the weight and dimensions regards the flight, I will and do transport laptops in the luggage and in spite of Mark's (Markham's) view that it's wrong, I got four laptops over to the Phils on my last trip, I separate the laptops, drives and RAM, the reason for that is that I can carry the RAM and drives in my hand baggage and the drives are what really matter but the RAM is also the expensive bit when you look at upgrading an older ebay laptop.

Really really fancy the 1510 might go ebaying today :D

I do understand that the Peli is ok for carry on but the weight of the Peli is quite high is it not?

Would be great for travelling around the Phils particularly as it will float and also given the huge strength of these things but I also felt that my existing solutions worked well too, for a single person one carry on bag that already weigh's a lot could be a problem.

But I fancy one anyway just for storing stuff safely at home :)

The case is very light, Jim. It is a lot lighter than I expected.

My pelistorm was crammed full of stuff last Jan/Feb, Jim. I didn't worry about them weighing it. The occasional water ingress in the Philippines is/was a much bigger problem to me.

My son poo'd into it when I had my back turned in Phils.....Just a quick wipe and disinfectant and it was right as rain. None of my photo stuff was marked thankfully.
It is locked at home also, their little fingers cannot unlock the combination :)

You can also sit on the case, which can be handy :)

I believe my remarks were to do with laptop batteries rather than the laptops themselves and I'm pretty sure I quoted Cathay Pacific's security advisory which had just been published at the time. :)

I wish it was Keith, I really do.
I still have no way of solving that and probably never will :help:

How are things with you, Keith?
Are you fully over your medical mishap in Portugal?

    I very much hope so.
